Gaia the dog was in a dire situation when she was found.
She was abandoned basically in the middle of nowhere in Central California.
But that wasn’t the worst of it. She was suffering from a broken leg. Not only did this make it difficult for her to care for herself but she has had to protect her babies.
She was pregnant when he was abandoned and gave birth shortly after.
“For three month, two women fed them daily, brought them fresh water, but couldn’t capture the mom, so they didn’t attempt to capture the babies. Sadly, they didn’t know where to turn for help,” Eldad Hager of Hope For Paws wrote on Flickr.
The ladies contacted The Bill Foundation for help who in turn reached out to Hope For Paws who agreed to rescue the dogs from California.
The Bill Foundation would make sure to find them home once the dogs were captured by Hope For Paws.
“When I arrived at the location, I spotted the puppies right away, but I couldn’t find the mom. I went to check on the pups, gave them some food to make an initial contact with them, and kept watching my back to make sure the mom doesn’t come behind me to defend her puppies,” Eldad explained.
A yellow truck stopped to ask what Eldad was doing and when Eldad explained, the man said that the mother dog had been hit by a truck and died two hours earlier.
“He said someone hit her and ran. He arrived there shortly after it happened, pulled over, and saw her as she was dying,” Eldad explained.
“He decided to rush home, get his gun, and take her out of her misery – realizing her injuries were fatal.When he got back with his gun, she was already dead.”
Since Eldad couldn’t save the mother, he made sure to take all of the babies to safety.
But it was not an easy task.
Eldad said that it was “one of the most challenging situations I ever faced.”
They were hiding in a storm drain that was too small for a small child to fit in.
After a lot of sweat, failed and successful plan, Eldad finally got all three puppies out of the drain.
Eldad just wishes that he got the email about the dogs 24 hours earlier.
Maybe the mom would have had a chance to live.
“I looked over at the mom and decided to leave her where she had given birth to these beautiful babies three months ago. She was an amazing mother, she loved her babies, and it just broke my heart to know that I this email was sent to me 24 hours too late,” Eldad wrote. “I didn’t bury her because I knew that her body can be consumed by other animals who are struggling out there… coyotes, vultures, and other hungry creatures. This is the last gift Gaia can give to others… this is natures recycling system, and it’s what keeps the cycle of life going.”
