The small chihuahua Cherry had been missing for five days and while her owner Katinka Slingsby was doing everything she could to locate the little pup, she couldn’t find her dog back.

“My dad was out with her walking up the mountain in the early evening throwing sticks for her, and then she just disappeared and he didn’t know where she went,” Katinka said.

Katinka loves animals and was especially close with her chihuahua. When the news broke that her dog went missing, friends and villagers donated more than $1500 to fund the use or purchase of an aerial drone that would be much more capable of finding her.

A local company that specializes in unmanned aerial vehicles heard Katinka’s story as well and decided they would help her return her dog to her, for free.

The Resource Group Unmanned Aviation Services didn’t use normal imaging systems to find the little pup Cherry back but instead relied on thermal imaging so that they could quickly spot Cherry’s heat signature.

Within twenty minutes of the drone being airborne, the little pup had already been found. She was hiding over in an abandoned mineshaft which is why no one was able to find her.

If it weren’t for the supporters, the village community and crowdfunding donators of the ‘Give a Dog a Drone’ campaign, Cherry may very well never have been found. The money that was being raised in the campaign eventually wasn’t necessary, which is why people will be able to receive their donation back or allow Katinka to transfer it to a local charity.

“The amount of money donated is amazing. We have offered to refund it to people if they want, but if not we are going to donate it to a local charity.”

It’s amazing that a drone was able to do in twenty minutes what nobody could in five days, but it’s equally as amazing how much a community can come together to help find a loved pet back.
