Inter-species relationships are always a joy to watch. There is something super cute about seeing two vastly different animals put aside their differences and view one another as equals. Cats and dogs, once believed to be enemies, can be seen all over YouTube acting as cute as can be around each other.

Even wild animals sometimes find friends in unlikely places.

BLT was a famous trio where Baloo the bear, Shere Khan the tiger, and Leo the lion all lived together in an enclosure as the best of friends. They were found in a basement in Atlanta and were taken back to the zoo. They just weren’t happy until they were all together (and were that way for years).

Mishka the dog found himself in a rather strange situation.

Mishka is a bear dog. No, he isn’t a mix-breed of a bear and a dog, but he does work with bears! A bear dog is used to recondition bears that have gotten used to hanging around and scavaging out of high human-traffic areas.

When there is a bear in town, Mishka shows it who is boss.

Bears really don’t enjoy having a dog barking and scaring it all the time. Since Mishka scares the bears, they don’t want to come around the spot they usually would frequent. For Mishka, that is a job well done! Being a bear dog requires lots of courage and a pretty tough personality.

While Mishka seems all tough on the outside, this story shows us his soft heart.

Something incredible happened that shows the bear-dogs true colors. While he spends his days chasing bears around, Mishka and his owner will occasionally get calls for other problems they can help solve. One day Mishka’s owner, Officer Richards, was called to help a fawn that was wandering around someone’s property.

When they arrived, it was soon realized that the fawn was orphaned.

We don’t know what happened to the fawn’s mother, only that the little deer was much too young to be alone in the woods. When they got on the scene, however, the normally loud and tough Mishka experienced quite the change.

When they put the fawn in the truck, Miska started acting like its parent!

The Karelian Bear Dog was suddenly a tender and loving parent! The fawn was looking for any source of comfort and kept reaching out to the Mishka. It looks like the pup’s instincts kicked in and he immediately became a loving friend to the little deer.

Caught on video, we can see Mishka licking and caring for the little deer!

In a wild turn of events, the two very different species found some common ground and became friends. The fawn was quite distressed and was able to make a friend, even though that friend wasn’t a deer. Now we just have to wonder if the fawn is going to grow up thinking its a dog!

Maybe the next step for the fawn is to go scare a bear away!

One day we might see the fruits of having Mishka as a trainer and parent for this little deer. When that happens, bears beware when this little fawn is around!
