Russia has a reputation for being very cold. It’s a place where you should wrap up if you’re going to be heading around town. A few years ago, in the midst of winter, a fluffy tabby came across a freezing baby abandoned in a cardboard box. With some quick thinking and loving care, the fluffy tabby managed to save the baby’s life.

The incident occurred approximately three years ago in Obninsk, located in the Kaluga region of Russia. Someone had abandoned a tiny baby, less than 12-weeks-old, in a random apartment block hallway. The temperatures were below zero, and the baby was starting to freeze.

A community cat, named Masha by the residents, must have heard the baby crying. She found the little human in the cardboard box and crawled in to keep him warm. The fluffy cat cuddled the baby for hours and meowed at passing people for help. Finally, someone realized what was going on.

Irina Lavrova, a resident of Obninsk said, “[Masha] is very placid and friendly, so when I heard her meowing, I thought perhaps she had injured herself.”

“Normally she would have come and said hello to me. You can imagine my shock when I saw her lying in a box next to a baby.”

“Clearly her mothering instincts had taken over, and she wanted to protect the child.”

When residents found the baby, they immediately contacted emergency services. Vera Ivanina, a paramedic on the scene, told REN TV (via Straits Times), “She [Masha] was so worried about where we were taking the baby. She ran right behind us, meowing. She was really a rational creature.”

Staff at the hospital estimated the baby to be under 12 months. And despite being left outside in the cold for hours, with Masha’s loving care, the boy was ultimately deemed in excellent health.

A hospital spokesperson elaborated, “The baby had only been outside for a few hours and thanks to Masha… he was not damaged by the experience.”

Residents are positive that Masha is the only thing that saved this innocent baby’s life.

Lavrova, who discovered Masha and the baby, said, “Everybody on the block is very proud of her. We have all spoiled her rotten by giving her favorite food.”
