Sergeant Jacob Fisher has been a diesel engine mechanic in the United States Marine Corps for eleven years and already has done three tours in the Middle East. He recently came back from a seven-month deployment in Afghanistan and greatly missed his family, but he met an adorable little pup that was able to lift his spirits.

When the marine was serving his country in dangerous territory, he would never have expected to make a best friend while he was there. The marine base he was deployed at installed a couple of animal traps directly outside of the base so that no wildlife would try to sneak in and run inside. Another marine noticed that an animal was caught by one of the traps, and asked Jacob to come along with him and take a look.

When Jacob arrived at the trap, he fell in love with “a small, little itty-bitty baby puppy” that was looking up to him.

Jacob decided to take the little pup in and gave him the name “Jax”.

“He looked kind of miserable, shaking a lot,” the marine said recalling the moment he found Jax. “He was definitely cold since it was snowing.”

“Going to Afghanistan I didn’t realize I would even see a dog on the base, let alone fall in love with a dog and want to bring him home,” Jacob Fisher said.

Jacob has been through some terrible times in Afghanistan with a lot of downhill moments, but he could thankfully count on the endless love he received from Jax. The marine sergeant especially missed his little boy at home. When he finally was able to return home, it was a bittersweet moment for him.

Thankfully, an organization exists that helps our troops to bring back pets from a deployment home with them, to give them a forever home for the rest of their lives. Thanks to Operation Baghdad Pups, Jax was transferred from Afghanistan to the United States about five days after Jacob returned home.

It was all a surprise for his son, who would be celebrating his birthday the day after. Jax arrived as an early birthday present for Jacob’s son, but it was mostly himself that was excited the most for the reunion. Jax has certainly grown a lot since their days in Afghanistan together and seems to have taken a liking already to Jacob’s son and wife.

Jacob’s best friend was finally home with him.

“Look at you, you’ve gotten so big,” the marine said playfully, “I’ve got my buddy back.”

What an emotional reunion and a beautiful heartfelt moment!
