Montana’s diverse terrain, ranging from the Rocky Mountains to the Great Plains, make for stunning scenery and conditions perfect for all sorts of living creatures.
The state conjures up images of the wild west, with heroes on horses chasing bandits and rebels. If the trees could talk, imagine the stories you’d hear.
It is still a wild state when the timing is right.
Check out this clip uploaded by Al Perry. A mare gives birth to a foal named Patriot, and while she waits for Patriot to stand and begin walking, chaos ensues.
She’s just given birth so in her weakened state, the mare is in no condition to fight if needed.
And yet she does.
A group of wild mustangs arrive attempting to claim her. The bachelors, like hooligans, harass the mother and she’s not having any of it. Not when her newborn is right there.
What a bunch of…
[Mustangs are not technically wild horses since they came from a domesticated population. The mustangs you see living in the wild are actually considered feral.
They are descendants of escaped, domestic Spanish horses brought to the Americas by Spanish explorers in the 16th century. The name “Mustang” is derived from the Spanish words “mestengo” and “mostrenco”
Meaning “wild or masterless cattle”.
Wild and masterless is right.
The mare won’t allow any of the bachelors to come near her foal, nor does she allow them to claim her. She gets in between them and her foal, and she looks ready to fight.
To think she’d just given birth.
“The way she gently keeps checking the foal while putting herself in between baby and stallion is fantastic. So gentle with baby, the boys get the kicks! The baby is such a pretty color too. It’s really obvious when the foal’s dad finally appears, lol.” says an observant viewer.
Another comment by a different viewer says, “Wow! the momma mare had a strong hindquarter to kick off the persistent bachelor stallions. Loved how she danced in circles around her new foal making sure the foal, Patriot, was totally protected.”
You don’t mess with a mom. Any mom.
Mustangs are often found roaming wild and free across those huge states but they can be domesticated still. These ones need to be tamed.
The mare is eventually reunited with her own group, but not after a fight which saw her prance around and kick at those wild bachelors. Her foal could do nothing but watch.
Mama’s got this!
Those wild boys thought they could have their way by the use of their numbers but mom’s got a literal kick. A kick that would have left a mark if she had connected hard.
They’d have deserved it anyway.
It’s good to know that this foal has mom’s blood running in its veins. So should the time come that it has to fight, the little one will know what to do. After all, Patriot got it from his mama.
