Despite the reputation of warm sunny skies, palm trees, and neverending Miami nightlife, many part os Florida can get surprisingly cool during the winter months. So cold with incredibly low temperatures that wildlife officials have been getting concerned with many marine animals like manatees and turtles during the first few weeks of the new year.
Turtles, on their part, will get stunned in the cold water and float in a lifeless manner around the shore. Although they might look dead, they are actually alive, and officials have focused on rescuing as many as possible.
On the other hand, the manatees have come up with a more effective method of dealing with the uncomfortable weather. They head towards Florida’s many canals, power plants and natural springs, and recently, over a hundred were seen at the canals of Indian Harbour Beach, and it caused quite a spectacle for all of those that caught a glimpse!
Officials believe that the manatees swam from the Indian river Lagoon and settled into the lagoon, where waters are around 70 degrees. This is perfect for the manatees, as they dislike anything lower than 68 degrees for an extended period of time. The lagoon they reside in has become incredibly cold in recent times, with some areas reporting as low as 50 degrees. No wonder the manatees decided to leave and find warmer waters! They’ve been reportedly coming to the area for nearly ten years and visitors from along the coast come to check out the incredible natural wonder.
In the video, the manatees themselves are seen bobbing up and down and swimming in peace while families and children watch the wild animals enjoy their swim in relative harmony!
Orlando’s wildlife officials have asked the public to be careful during this time. They’ve especially asked boaters to be “extra viligant” while they stay warm, and the conservation for these animals has become a priority for the officials.
Nature can be truly incredible and it is little moments like this that prove that no matter what, animals will endure. The manatees have proved to be intelligent and cunning survivalists, adapting to their environment and utilizing man made adaptations to their natural geography to survive the cold winter. It’s truly incredible and we hope that the manatees will find themselves warm and comfortable as they survive the next few months.
