It’s rare to see birds abandon their young. Even if it looks like they have, they’ll often come back to their young after a day or so. Unfortunately, the case wasn’t the same for one particular gosling.

This goose abandoned this one gosling for some reason.

Brian Lovins happened to observe a nesting goose during his break from work, but when he moved closer, he became surprised when he saw one little gosling a step farther away from its mother.

The poor gosling was curling at the rocky corner like a wet ball of feathers.

It bugged him when the mother goose showed no interest and paid little attention to the poor gosling even though it was still alive.

The man found out that the gosling was the first one to hatch.

“The mother abandoned her because she was born early,” Lovins told The Dodo.

Out of eight eggs, only one actually did hatch. Despite that, the mother kept pushing the gosling away. Using a stick, the man gently poked and pushed it towards its mother. But somehow, the next day when he came back, the gosling was even farther away from its mother. He found it curling again underneath the pipe looking for warmth.

Hope for survival was bleak for this gosling.

It is heartbreaking to see how the gosling was already struggling to live even after being hatched. Eventually, the mother goose flew away, leaving the poor gosling alone.

Lovins knew that if he left the baby goose there for another day or two, it would already be too late. That is why he made a bold decision of taking care of the gosling. He came back to the spot with a box, and then he carried her back to his home.

He started nursing the abandoned gosling in his home.

Lovins started calling the gosling “Mr. Waddles.” He was worried at first because the baby goose showed no improvements.

“She was so weak,” Lovins shared. “She couldn’t even hold her neck up.”

However, after three or four days, the gosling could finally waddle around and even started to eat solid food.

The man was really glad that she made it. The moment Mr. Waddles grew up, Lovins realized that he made a mistake with the name – Mr. Waddles was supposed to be Miss.

The baby gosling started to think her rescuer was his mother.

Both of them spent a lot of time together, and they became inseparable. The man just couldn’t go anywhere without the little goose tailing him around. When Lovins began to run, Waddles would sprint as fast as she could to catch up.

Even though Lovins wasn’t her mother, he tried his best to be one.

Lovins knew that there are plenty of things he couldn’t do for Waddles, especially when he’s not a goose himself. However, he did his best to teach Waddles to be a goose. When Waddles grew big enough, Lovins began encouraging her to fly. He’d run flapping his arms hoping that the goose would imitate him.

The activity became a daily routine, and eventually, their efforts paid off.

A lot of things happened, but Waddles stayed with him in the end.

One day, Lovins found waddles with a broken wing. He received help from people to have her wing amputated so she could survive. After Waddle’s long recovery, she’s finally back waddling in the water. What’s more, this happy special goose will forever be cherished by her acting-parent, Lovins.
