Taking care of one pet alone can already be a lot of work. You must think of the food they consume, their vaccines and vet check-ups, plus their all-around care. It is much more challenging when you don’t have a lot of resources.
That is why we could consider shelters and foster homes as heroes.
Taking in dogs that need more care and spending for their basic needs is no easy feat. Most of the time, rescue animals would need regular visits to the vet. Plus, it can be taxing to take in more than one animal.
But can you imagine rescuing and taking care of 750 dogs all at once?
Believe it or not, this Serbian man has been rescuing abandoned dogs since 2008. It all started when he saw four puppies inside a box left at the side of the street. At that moment, he wasn’t aware yet of how far it would go. He just wanted to help.
Sasha Pesic didn’t even have any experience with dogs.
All he wanted was to save them. He found another eight until the number grew to 60 abandoned dogs. He realized that his apartment was not enough to have all of them inside it. Luckily, he found a nearby shed of a horse club. That was 2010.
Fast forward to today, and Sasha has rescued over 1,700 dogs already.
He drove around highways, busy roads, abandoned houses and fields, and nearby forests because these are the most common places where people would leave their dogs. Seeing them weak and on the brink of death was what kept Sasha going all those years.
In some instances, he risked his life to save these dogs.
You probably saw this viral video of him as well. He tried to rescue a dog left in the river. His first instinct was to save it without realizing he needed some help to climb back up the bridge. Luckily, some passers-by saw what he did and never thought twice about helping him.
But it’s not always a beautiful story as he continued to struggle to sustain his cause.
Over the years, he had around 400-500 dogs adopted. However, that is a small number compared to those left in his care. Today, he has over 750 dogs in his care, and even the donations he received are not enough.
He found small ways to still feed all the dogs.
Sometimes, he asks for stale bread from the bakeries or meat leftovers from the butcher shop. One thing he can’t improvise, though, is the medical bills. He said that this is where he spent most of the donation to ensure all the dogs’ health.
For Sasha, everything is all a matter of ‘when.’
He knew within his heart that he’d love to continue what he’s been doing for the past years. It’s all a matter of when he still can care for them. What kept him going was seeing all the dogs given a new life after being adopted.
Help sustain Sasha’s Shelter by donating through Patreon or adopting the dogs under his care.
