Eldad Hager is the founder of the Hope for Paws organization and he’s always looking for ways to help homeless animals, dogs in particular. Eldad and the rest of his crew received a phone call and were planning to rescue six dogs in a cave area, but they quickly noticed that there were more helpless dogs stuck in the cave.
Because the cave could impossibly fit a human, they stayed and dug a hole big enough for Eldad to go through. They found three other homeless pups and wanted to get them out as quickly and as painless as possible. It didn’t go very smoothly, as the dogs have been alone for quite some time and were afraid of anyone coming nearby.
Two women who work in the neighborhood have spotted a number of homeless dogs about two years ago and have given them food and kept in touch with Hager about their predicament. They always tried to come up with plans on how to rescue them.
One day, the women called and said that one of the dogs they’ve been seeing for two years has given birth to a number of puppies and the little pups were hiding in a cave. They kept popping in and out of the cave, so it wasn’t easy for Eldad and his team to find out where the dogs exactly were.
After hours of looking and searching they determined there were nine pups that needed to be rescued. The majority of those were saved relatively quickly, but some were stuck deeper into the cave. The rescuers dug a hole in the cave until it was wide and large enough for Eldad to fit in. He quickly spotted the pups, grabbed a hold of them and asked the others to pull as hard as they could.
“They don’t understand what we’re doing there, for all they know we’re predators trying to hurt them,” Hagar said in an interview with The Dodo. “It took hours and hours because we had to go slow and try not to shake the earth,” Hagar said. “At the end of the rescue I was almost deaf in one ear from all the dirt falling into it. Every time a train went by you could feel the whole ground shaking. It was a pretty scary experience.”
After the long and difficult rescue process, all the puppies and their dad – Tank – have been rescued and brought to two different foster homes. The pups are now thriving and are very happy.
At the moment Edgar and the Hope for Paws foundation are coming up with long-term plans for the dogs. They estimate that within two months all the little pups will be moving in with loving families.
