An emergency call is often all it takes to spur animal rescue workers into action, no matter the weather! In Serbia, one shelter got a call in the middle of a blizzard and the following story turned out to be shocking.
Dog Rescue Shelter Mladenovac is based out of Serbia and the calls they get are often wild.
The shelter currently looks after 350 dogs, 20 cats, and dozens of other animals and they still go out every day and do incredible work. One particular call they got in January of 2020 involved a lone mama dog sleeping in a pipe in the snow.
They hopped in their car and went to investigate.
They were told that the dog only came out when someone was nearby, so they had a place to start. Some of the pipes were buried in the snow and were clearly not in use – then they saw one that appeared to have been dug out and cleared.
They approached the pipe without snow and saw pawprints nearby!
With a whistle, they called to the dog who might be nearby. Soon, they saw a pup that came running towards them! The dog leaped out of the pipe and came directly to the waiting arms of the people who were there to help her. She clearly wasn’t afraid of humans at all!
The rescuers decided to look in the pipe, just to be sure there wasn’t anything they were missing.
And thankfully they did, too! There were puppies inside! The dog had been looking after puppies in the cold winter and was nursing them in the pipe where they could stay out of the bitter wind.
The puppies were really scared and didn’t want to come to the people trying to help.
The plan was the let mama go in and comfort the pups and hopefully, they might follow her out. Still, however, they were too afraid. They took the mama dog and put her in their can while they focused on getting her babies out. She would be warm in there for the time being.
For the next attempt, the crew used food.
Few things work as well as food with a hungry puppy! Unfortunately, they weren’t interested because they were suckling from their mom. It was time to kick the plan up a notch. They took some branches and poked around from one side, hoping to scare them out the other.
Finally, the plan seemed to work!
The other man used a broom to pull them out from the other side. It was a bit rough for the pups, but it was necessary to get them out of the cold and back with their mama. Thankfully, this final attempt worked and they got the adorable puppies safe!
With three puppies and a happy mama, the crew left the pipe and went back to the shelter.
It takes one brave mama to search out strangers, hoping for help! Thankfully, that hope paid off and allowed her to save herself and her pups from a cold and dangerous situation. Now, they’ll get a warm place to sleep and the care they need.
