When a good Samaritan spotted a fox limping through a field, she knew she had to help him. The poor creature was clearly in pain and needed medical attention. And so, the woman called up Dan Martin, a local wildlife rescuer, and told him about the injured fox.

Luckily, the fox was only a three-minute drive from Martin’s office. Martin hurried over to the area and found the fox, who he later named Basil. Martin slowly walked towards Basil, holding a soft towel. After about 20 minutes, Basil allowed Martin to approach him.

“After a brief discussion with him (I was doing all the talking) about what the plan was, I gently wrapped the towel around him and scooped him up with no fuss whatsoever,” Martin wrote on Facebook.

Martin examined Basil and realized he had been shot in the foot. Martin called a veterinarian, but he wasn’t able to get an appointment until the next day, so he brought Basil home with him for the night.

Martin gave Basil lots of treats and attention that night. By morning, Basil completely trusted Martin, and he affectionately cuddled with his rescuer all morning long.

“He became amazingly cuddly,” Martin told The Dodo. “I can only assume he was grateful for the help and all of the treats he had the night before.”

Martin kept Basil company at the veterinarian’s office, and he stayed with him during his appointment. There, he learned that Basil’s foot would have to be amputated. The vet also said that Basil was most likely bred in captivity, which was why he was so friendly.

The vet scheduled the surgery for later that same day. Martin held Basil while they waited, cuddling with the cute fox.

“He was so cuddly with me I opted to stay with him for the hour-and-a-half wait for his surgery, which he seemed really happy about,” Martin said. “I was even there as he drifted off to sleep on the operating table.”

The surgery went perfectly, and afterward, Basil went to his temporary new home at the National Fox Welfare Society. This organization looked after Basil during his recovery. Then, once he was well enough, they helped him find a forever home with one of their rescuers.

Martin closely followed Basil’s progress, and he was thrilled to see that he was going to such a good home.

“I really hope to see him again,” Martin said. “I’ve been following his progress on their web page, and he’s clearly the most handsome fox there.”
