He approached the fence slowly to find that its little feet had frozen to the post. The poor bird was clearly uncomfortable and distressed.

The fence is right near a large water tank that’s heated to remain liquefied in near zero temperatures during winter, so it is common for him to find birds hanging around it for a drink.

“Apparently this unfortunate bird had gotten its feet wet and, while making its exit, had become frozen to the fence in the prevailing near zero Idaho temperatures,” he said.

“First, I attempted to warm the feet of the frightened bird by pressing my palm against both the fence and the bird’s feet, while also gently restraining the bird’s flapping wings,” he added.

“It then seemed that warming the bird’s feet with my warm breath would bring quicker success.”

He began gently rubbing the foot with his thumb to warm it up even more before the bird was finally able to break free from the frozen steel pole.
