If you’re looking to make a positive impact on the world, there’s nothing more rewarding than adopting an animal from a shelter.

Not only are you doing your bit to help make an animal’s life ten times better, but as an added bonus your new pet will also make your own life better in every way.

We can find absolutely no argument for not adopting a cat or dog from the shelter. Not only do our pets give us unconditional love, but they also encourage us to be more active, as well as giving us an important sense of responsibility. Then there’s the apparent health benefits of having a furry companion, including decreased blood pressure, lowered stress levels, and even decreased risk of heart attack!

Yusuf Islam (formerly Cat Stevens), is a singer-songwriter who wants to push the important message of the benefits of adopting from a shelter. Yusuf is a huge dog-lover, and he has created many songs about his love for his furry friends.

To celebrate the 50th anniversary of one of his songs, “I Love My Dog,” he has partnered with PETA to give a little extra help to those dogs who may need it – and if you haven’t heard his song before, you’re going to instantly fall in love with it!

The lyrics in “I Love My Dog” are enough to bring tears to our eyes, and now that PETA has created an emotional video to go with it, we’ll admit that we might have had a sniffle or two! Some of the lyrics in Yusuf’s tearjerking song are:

“I love my dog as much as I love you, but you may fail, my dog will always come through. All he asks for me is the food to give him strength; all he ever needs is love and that he knows he’ll get. All the pay I need comes shining through his eyes, I don’t need no cold water to make me realize that I love my dog.”

Simply beautiful! As the song plays, the video shows the story of a man who adopts a senior dog from a shelter. He takes the sweet dog home in his car, before the pair begin to settle into everyday life together.

It’s a little rough at the beginning, as the cheeky dog empties out the trash can and isn’t quite sure how to walk on a lead. But the man treats every situation with humor and patience, and within no time the old dog relaxes and even begins to learn new tricks!

At the end of the video, we see what life would be like for the man without his dog.

His house is empty and quiet, and all the love and excitement seems to have gone from his life. As soon as the dog appears again, it’s like a dark cloud has been lifted and the man’s life is fulfilling once more.

If this song doesn’t make you want to adopt an animal, then we don’t know what will! We think it’s such a beautiful message to get out there to the world, and we hope it encourages more people to think about adopting and to remember that when you adopt an animal, it’s a commitment that you have for their whole lives.
