When Daniel Ross came outside after a rainstorm, he spotted something on the sidewalk that got washed up in the rain.
That something was a tiny little baby hummingbird.
The poor little creature didn’t look like it was doing well, but that didn’t stop Ross from trying to help it anyway.
“We didn’t think it had a chance but we had to give it a try,” he said in a video caption on his YouTube page.
So, Ross got to work making a little nest for the baby bird. He placed a little basket in his window with some soft cloth and placed the bird inside.
He also started feeding this little guy from an eye-dropper. But something amazing happened after a day and a half.
The baby bird’s mother returned and started taking over feeding duty.
“I was just thinking how lucky that little guy was that mom came back to take care of him and I was grateful,” Ross told The Dodo.
Ross said he was sure that the mom bird knew exactly that the little baby boy bird was her own.
“Most of the time when he has his little mouth open, he was peeping. He was calling for mom,” he said.
The mother spent her days going back and forth making sure that her boy was well fed.
“Judging by how often mom came back you could tell that he was a real hungry boy,” Ross said.
Ross said he was overwhelmed by the beauty of the bond between this mother and her child, calling it “amazing.” And the little baby hummingbird was learning a lot during this time.
“He was stretching his wings and flapping his wings and made little buzzes, like a big fly almost,” Ross said. “He’s so little you could see he was practicing and he was getting his courage up.”
And he used his mom as an example to help get him ready to take flight.
“He saw mom come in and hovering there [in the air] and he knew he could do it too,” Ross said. “He was almost taking off and you knew it was just a matter of time before he was going to be buzzing off.”
Soon enough, the day finally came when the little bird was able to take flight and leave the nest on its own.
It was a big deal for the bird, the bird’s mom, and Ross.
“That was his very first flight ever,” Ross said.
“I was so emotional that I was able to see it and be there for it. I had a tear in my eye.”
Ross recorded the baby hummingbird’s rescue as well as his first flight out of the nest. The story ended up being picked up by The Dodo.
