There are plenty of reasons to love winter, but at the same time, there are also reasons to hate it.
For example, some people would be bothered by cold temperatures, and there are times when the snow is too strong that shoveling afterward would be kind of tiring. One more thing that makes winter a hassle is that it freezes almost everything, especially lakes and ponds.
Winter is even a hard time for most animals.
Food is the utmost priority for all living beings, and when winter comes, the accessibility drops drastically. As such, squirrels and other woodland animals learned to hoard food before winter so they could survive until spring.
Winter is also the time when bears, except for polar bears, hibernate. When large bodies of water are frozen, animals are forced to eat snow or lick glaciers as substitutes for water.
Sometimes, they could slip and fall into the ice while crossing frozen lakes and such.
On some occasions, animals would try to cross a frozen lake in search of food or shelter. Unfortunately, there are times when the ice breaks and submerges them in freezing-cold water. Even if the ice doesn’t break, they could potentially slip, and then it becomes difficult for them to get back up.
Slipping usually happens with hooved animals
While humans could accidentally slip on icy slopes, so do some animals, most especially with hooves. Despite the fact that four-legged animals like deer have better balance than us, one small misstep could result in a fall. When they do, it’s especially difficult to get themselves up because of their hooves.
This is exactly what happened to a deer somewhere in Wisconsin.
On Christmas Eve, Gil Lancour happened to come across a troubling doe in the middle of a frozen pond. He was out with his friend John Moss when this happened.
The poor doe might have tried crossing the ice but unfortunately fell. No one knew how long the poor deer was stranded in the pond, but by the looks of it, the doe seemed already exhausted. Since Lancour knew that the poor doe couldn’t get herself up, he tried to think of something to help her.
Lancour suddenly thought of a practical way to help the stranded doe.
At first, Lancour tried to involve Moss in helping him get the deer across. However, when Moss approached the doe, the doe immediately panicked. In an instant, Lancour gently placed his hands on the troubled animal to calm her down.
At that moment, he realized there is an easy way to save the doe – by pushing sliding her on the slippery ice until they safely reach the edge. Since the doe was already calmed down, he began pushing.
The doe was surprisingly cool with Lancour sliding her.
It was a small thing, and while expecting nothing in return, Lancour admirably acted selflessly. His efforts got noticed, and the video went viral on social media.
When interviewed, Moss told the Wisconsin Rapids Tribune:
“I think it was a good time. It was right before Christmas, and it was a video showing an act of kindness that fits with that time of year, and with how 2020 has been, I think people want to see acts of kindness.”
