Animals belong in the wild, but sometimes Mother Nature can be a cruel mistress. Not every creature is well-equipped to endure the harsh realities of living in the wild, and the results of this poor preparation can be catastrophic. One deer family was torn apart due to an injury the baby endured.
Darius Sasnauskas lives near Yellowstone National Park, and he is in love with nature. His house is not surrounded by fencing, so the wildlife of the area is free to enter and exit the property as needed. One day, as Darius was watching the beautiful sights, he noticed something strange happening.
Three deer stepped onto his property: a mother and her two babies. Unfortunately, one of the young ones was having a hard time keeping up with the group. There was something wrong with her front legs, and the injury was making it hard for her to walk.
The doe, fearful for her life, had no choice but to leave her injured fawn behind. If she tried to keep this little deer in the group, she would be unable to protect herself or her other baby from predators. Darius watched as the mother and sister left behind this poor deer.
Once the other two were gone, the man made it his mission to help this lost soul. He took the deer into his home, where he provided her with comfort and protection. Luckily, the pets who already lived inside were more than accommodating.
“Well, I kept a close eye on her most of the time through the night, just kind of watching with my binoculars,” Darius explained to HuffPost. “It was early morning that I brought her inside. My old cats and dogs – they are all super friendly. They just kind of were curious at first. What is this little creature? They were observing the first day, and it took them one day . . . It was fine. It was no problem.”
Darius was relieved that his animals got along so well with the deer. With one stressor out of the way, the hero was free to focus on fixing up the fawn’s leg. The deer’s left joint seemed strained, so Darius made her a brace from an oatmeal box.
“It gave her pretty good support on the weak joint she had,” the man observed. “After the first five days she started getting better; I noticed that her leg was getting better. I took her brace off, and she was walking fine.”
Now that the little deer was recovered, it was time to return her to the wild. Darius took the fawn out each night to look for her biological mother, but he never had any luck. Even when the little one was in the presence of other deer, she chose to stay by her rescuer’s side. The man began to worry that he wouldn’t be able to reunite the fawn with her real family.
The time came for Darius to leave town, so he locked up his dogs and took off for a few days. During his absence, the mother returned to her lost little one. She took her baby away, and the small deer was finally able to live out her days as a wild creature.
“My friends were watching the baby, and the mother showed up the first night,” Darius shared. “They released her, and the mom started nursing her. It was very helpful that I was out of town because the baby was missing me, and the dogs were locked, so it was like a perfect situation for her to accept the mom and for her to be accepted by her real mom.”
The man is glad to have been a part of this sweet deer’s life, and he hopes only the best for her as her adventure continues.
“I’m sure she has a better life right now with her real family and being in the wild where she belongs. I hope she is being safe and having a great life.”
Kind souls like Darius are the reason there is still hope for humanity. If we can all learn to look past ourselves and help others in need, the world will be a much better place.
