David Foster was having the time of his life on his Amazon River cruise. Foster had seen incredible sights and met amazing people. The cruise boat often docked in very remote places, including small, deserted islands. One day, the cruise docked one of these islands. But to everyone’s surprise, the island wasn’t deserted.
As the passengers got off the boat, a skeletal black dog ran towards them.
Foster immediately went over to the dog and started petting her.
She was so emaciated he could see every one of her ribs, and it was clear she had been left on the island to die. But despite all the hardship she’d been through, the dog was still as friendly as could be. Her tail wagged constantly as Foster pet her.
Foster felt an immediate connection with the pup, who he named Negrita.
Foster knew he couldn’t leave the dog there to die, and so he asked the boat’s crew if he could bring her onboard. They quickly agreed, and soon, the cruise had a new passenger!
Negrita stayed on the boat for the rest of the day while it was docked at the island. Foster and the crew fed her and played with her. The sweet dog’s tail never stopped wagging—she was so happy to be with people who cared about her.
Not everyone on the boat was happy about taking Negrita onboard, though. Many of the other passengers didn’t want a stray dog on their cruise.
That night, before the boat left the island, a few passengers untied Negrita and sent her back to shore. The crew and Foster didn’t realize what had happened, and so they headed back onto the river without Negrita.
Foster woke up in the middle of the night with the feeling that something was wrong. He went to look for Negrita but couldn’t find her anywhere. Panicking, he told the captain they had to turn back.
When they got back to the island, they found Negrita patiently lying on the shore waiting for them.
Foster felt a huge sense of relief when Negrita was back on the boat. And that’s when he realized how much he already loved Negrita. He decided then and there that he was going to bring the dog home to Northern Ireland.
Foster wanted to get Negrita to get a veterinarian as quickly as possible. And so, the next time the boat docked at a city, Foster went looking for someone who could help him. He found one woman who spoke English, and he told her Negrita’s story. She agreed to look after the dog until Foster could bring her home.
It ended up taking Foster five months to get all the paperwork necessary to get Negrita to the UK. Finally, after months of waiting, Negrita boarded a plane from Sao Paolo to Northern Ireland.
Foster met Negrita at the airport, and when he saw her for the first time, he was shocked to see how happy and healthy she was! Negrita’s foster mom had taken great care of her.
Negrita and Foster were both so excited to see each other again. Negrita’s whole body wagged as she greeted Foster.
Foster took Negrita home, and the pup quickly settled into life in the UK. The sweet dog loved going for walks and hanging out with her dad!
