It’s nice when a family or group accepts you as one of their own. So imagine how Darrick feels knowing he’s accepted as a member of this Elephant herd. All he did was help rescue them and look at how they treat him now.
These huge mammals are really smart creatures. You know the old saying, an elephant never forgets? Well that certainly holds true for this herd and Darrick. One call and they come to meet him.
He is especially close to KhamLa.
Darrick greets all the elephants yet you can see how he gives KhamLa all his attention afterwards. He talks to the elephant then leads her to the river for a bath where he uses his hands to scoop the water up and over the elephant’s head. Other elephants join in for a dip too!
And what’s better than to take a walk in the park after a refreshing bath? KhamLa always takes Darrick’s hand whenever they walk. she really does love her human friend. Her second chance at life is all because of this man.
The two best friends spend time with each other, showing and giving affection here and there.
There are many stories of humans and elephants bonding but this one is truly special. Darrick and KhamLa’s bond is much closer than all the others it’s a marvelous sight to behold. And the other elephants don’t mind.
How about a little playtime?
Darrick takes a huge ball attached with a few bells and chains. It bounces when thrown while making a jangling noise which gets the elephants in to a playful mood. The others join in and to be honest, who wouldn’t want to play with elephants in a place like this?
The other elephants don’t just tag along for no reason either.
They are actually watching out for Darrick as well. It’s a herd thing. The more of them there are, the less chances of a predator or a threat to come. Darrick is one of them!

KhamLa and the others are Asian Elephants.
Slightly smaller compared to their African cousins, with smaller, rounded ears, they are classified as endangered and most of them live in parks and sanctuaries dedicated to their welfare and survival.
Habitat loss from deforestation and agricultural development, trafficking for the tourism trade, and the illegal ivory trade are just some of the threats facing these beautiful animals. The survival of the species are now in the hands of the dedicated men and women who do their part in educating others and caring for these elephants.
Darrick has volunteered at the park for many years, giving his time and efforts to the same mission others have taken. But to witness his bond with KhamLa is something else. It’s a testament to how highly evolved these mammals are as well.
KhamLa and her herd remember this man who helped them. They accepted him as one of their own, which is pretty rare, meaning that there really is a genuine love established between man and elephants. Darrick is one lucky dude.
