A man was walking down the sidewalk in New South Wales, Australia when he spotted a tiny kitten. The 4-week-old kitten was completely still, very underweight, and covered in ants. But the kitten was still breathing, so the man knew there was a chance that he could be saved.
The man picked up the kitten and wiped the gunk out of his eyes. He also removed the ants from the kitten’s fur.
The man already had his own rescue cat at home, so he couldn’t take the kitten in himself. He wanted to make sure that the kitten ended up in the best home possible, so he called up CatRescue 901 for help.
CatRescue 901 picked up the kitten and brought him to their rescue center. They decided to name him Gaius, which is Latin for “to rejoice.” When they weighed him, they were shocked at how small he was:
“Gaius weighed in at a very tiny 217 grams [7 ounces] when we got him. He would be four weeks old from his ear development so should have weighed at least 500 grams [17 ounces],” Jenny Storaker, Co-Director of CatRescue 901, told Love Meow.
CatRescue 901 began feeding him and giving him fluids. After 24 hours at CatRescue 901, Gaius had put on 25 percent of his body weight. This little kitten was on his way to recovery!
Along with being underweight, the kitten also had cat flu when he came in, so CatRescue 901 gave him medicine for that. They also gave him medicine for his eyes.
A few days after entering their care, CatRescue 901 shared a Facebook post showing how much Gaius has already grown.

Amazingly, after just a week with CatRescue 901, Gaius had almost doubled his body weight.
Gaius is growing more and more each day. He’s also regaining his energy, and he’s turning into a playful kitty who loves exploring his new foster home.
Gaius is a little fighter who won’t let anything stop from getting healthy and stronger. We can’t wait to watch this kitten grow up!
