There’s nothing calmer or more serene to a nature lover than getting to commune with the animals that live near their home.
Many of us will often leave out bird seed so we can be dazzled by the array of native birds or scraps of food for the local deer.
One man who loves to leave out food for his neighborhood raccoons captured his nightly feeding ritual on video. Apparently, this guy didn’t get the memo on why shouldn’t feed raccoons. There’s actually a slew of reasons why this isn’t the greatest idea.
“While it may be fun to feed raccoons, it’s not a nice thing to do. The problem is that in the natural environment (that means your neighborhood), there is only a certain amount of food for each animal. If you put extra food outside, the animals will eat it, and they will grow plump and healthy and more of their babies will survive, etc,” Raccoon Attic Guide writes.
“But the problem is that if the food ever stops (and are you really going to put out food EVERY DAY for years?) there will not be enough other food to sustain these animals, who have made a habit of visiting your house, and now they will start to starve, they will compete with other animals, and all of the animals will suffer. Also, you’ve now trained a raccoon to seek out people for food.”
And the whole seeking people out for food thing is exactly what happened in this man’s case when he started feeding some raccoons outside of his home.
And it wasn’t long before those raccoons started coming back regularly for food.
Then those raccoons told their friends that there was food at his house, and those raccoons told their friends… and so on and so on. Now, this guy has dozens of raccoons outside his house waiting for a handout. He even captured the crazy scene on video.
“This guy started leaving food out for raccoons and now he has an army of them waiting outside his house every night!” the video’s caption on UNILAD reads.
This guy couldn’t believe what he saw when he opened his door to feed the raccoons.
“I went to go feed my raccoons but you can’t believe how many are out there tonight,” he says in his video. “The word is out! You gotta check this out!”
He opens his sliding door to show the camera the giant posse outside.
“Hey, come here, hey raccoons,” he says to them.
There is at least 30 adorable raccoon bandit looking faces looking up him patiently waiting to be fed.
“Raccoons are everywhere,” he says to the raccoons. “Come on, you wanna eat baby?”
“Get a panoramic close shot there,” he says to the videographer.
“Hey, you want some? Come on everybody gets some,” he tells the raccoons. “Yeah, how about you in the back? Awww, here guys. You hungry? Come on.”
He just keeps tossing out cups of food to his grateful furry little friends. Some of them are standing, some of them are crawling over each other, and all trying to get a bite to eat in a peaceful manner.
It’s really an incredible sight to see.
