Being out on the open ocean can be a remarkable experience.
Depending on where you are, spending time on the ocean can bring with it many different emotions. On one hand, it’s definitely peaceful to be all alone with one’s thoughts and away from the bustle of city life. It can also be a little bit scary being so isolated and standing against such a vast body of water before you. Perhaps above all, it’s humbling and it puts our own size and importance in the world into perspective.
Still, sometimes something out of the ordinary can happen as well.
Scottish freelance journalist Paul English was on a kayaking tour in Manitoba when he decided he would try to make the trip extra special.
English had heard that there were many beluga whales in the area and wanted to see some for himself. To lure them out, he strapped a GoPro camera to his helmet and began singing to the belugas while he paddled out into the bay. At first, the process was something of an inside joke with himself. It seemed unlikely that he would actually make contact with any of these enormous animals.
As it turns out, English ended up getting more than he bargained for.
Out in the middle of the bay, something popped up out of the water near English’s kayak.
He turned over his shoulder and saw something else pop on the other side. Before he knew it he was surrounded by belugas—and he could hardly believe his good luck. As it turns out, English’s singing had actually worked! After the initial kayak ride was over, English set back out to try and get a closer look at some of the animals. While he was underwater, he tried singing to the animals.
In return, the whales even sang right back at him!
Through it all, English had an experience that was truly one-of-a-kind.
Whatever your opinion is on the ocean, English truly got everything he came for and more that day—all with the good fortune of getting the entire experience on camera! Personally, a brush with animals this large is pretty frightening to consider. Still, after seeing the video of how adorable and sweet these whales are, the whole adventure suddenly seems worth trying out!
