The drought in Kenya is causing a huge water crisis throughout the country. One man is taking it upon himself to keep the wild animals of Tsavo West National Park alive and hydrated.
Patrick Kilonzo Mwalua, founder of Tsavo Volunteers a non-profit organization that aims to conserve wildlife and restore animal habitats, spends a few hours each day driving around the dry lands providing water to the animals from his blue tank truck. According to Bored Panda, Mwalua is a humble pea farmer in his local village. Due to the appalling effects that global warming is having on Kenya, Mwalua knew the only source of water the animals could drink from would need to be provided by humans.
Providing for the animals is what Mwalua has done and will continue to do. It’s no easy task. It takes a lot of patience to drive the slow heavy truck through endless of miles, in the scorching hot heat, in order to deliver water where it is needed most.
A fellow volunteer shared with The Dodo, “His commitment to the wildlife and his heritage is unmeasurable. Even risking his own life in the middle of the night to deliver water to a dry water hole.”
“There is completely no water, so the animals are depending on the humans. If we don’t help them, they will die,” Mwalua tells The Dodo. Mwalua drives around Tsavo West National Park everyday for a few hours, filling up the dry water holes with his truck that holds 3,000 gallons of fresh water.
The thirsty wild animals often greet Mwalua by waiting next to the dried up water hole. More often than not, they start crowding the water truck even before he cranks the tap. “Last night, I found 500 buffalo waiting at the water hole. When I arrived they could smell the water… They started drinking water while I was standing there. They get so excited,” explained Mwalua.
Mwalua, the kind animal lover, is saving the lives of these animals. He will continue to love and care for the animals as long as he can. “I was born around here and grew up with wildlife and got a lot of passion about wildlife,” he told The Dodo. A few American women were inspired by Mwalua’s passion for animals and set up a GoFundMe page for him.
