There’s nothing that makes out hearts ache more than the thought of homeless shelter dogs celebrating their birthday in a lonely cage without the love of an owner.
Sadly, many rescue centers just don’t have the funds to be celebrating each and every little pup’s birthday in the way that they deserve.
Wouldn’t it be amazing if there was a way for these dogs to feel a bit more loved on their one special day?
One man had an amazing idea that he was able to turn into a reality, with beautiful results.
Meet Rocky Kanaka from the U.S. This amazing man has a passion for our little furry friends is an advocate for supporting cat and dog rescue around the world.
Rocky is not short of doing good deeds when it comes to animals. In the past, he has traveled through North America fighting to raise awareness for homeless pets, as well as currently hosting a show called Dog’s Day Out where he takes shelter dogs out on the best day they have ever had.
What a truly selfless man.
Furthering his love for animals, Rocky is also a pet chef. We totally didn’t know that this career path even existed, but now that we do, we’d like to switch jobs, please!
Being a pet chef is slightly different because the food has to be good for dogs’ tummies. This means that a lot of the ingredients have to be switched up to make it safe for our pooches to eat.
Rocky’s company ships thousands of dog cakes across the nation, but Rocky felt like there was more that he could do. He said:
“It makes me really happy to think about a bunch of doggies out there having a really great birthday party with their family. But what makes me really sad is that there are homeless dogs out there who don’t get to have that experience.”
So in an amazing act of kindness, Rocky and his team decided to make one hundred cakes for one hundred homeless dogs — and each one was going to be personalised.
This required lots of work, and by the second day, the cakes still weren’t finished! But Rocky and his team were up for the challenge.
Each cake was personalized with a homeless dog’s name, and then the fun part arrived. The cakes were ready to go!
First to try out the cakes were Kobe and Marley, and you can tell just how much they’re enjoying this tasty treat!
We bet they’ve never had a birthday quite like this one before.
The cakes are then distributed around the shelter to the rest of the dogs. Forget one birthday — it’s like all their birthdays have come at once. By the end of the day, there’s not even a crumb left on the floor!
Once the shelter dogs have eaten their fill, Rocky realizes that there are still lots of cakes left! He contacts some other local shelters, and the cakes are gone in no time.
The shelters even sent pictures and videos so we can see how much these pooches are enjoying this special day.
The dogs are well and truly living their best lives.
