Mothers are responsible for the growth and development of their children during most of their waking hours.
A mother is the first teacher of a child. She teaches her children basic values and behavior. They play a huge role in their children’s lives, from showering them with love every day to nurturing them with utmost affection and care. The way a child develops can be largely attributed to the role that their parents play in their lives.
But how do moms across the animal kingdom cope with the strenuous demands of pregnancy, giving birth, and the arduous task of rearing their young?
The job of the mother—whether you are a human or an animal—is to raise kids who can protect and fend for themselves until they eventually leave the nest.
The challenges of motherhood are especially daunting for those in the wild. They already deal with survival concerns every day such as avoiding predators and finding food, which is amplified when a female has little ones to protect and nourish.
Even though animals are definitely born with instincts, it’s still often up to the mother to teach them how to use those instincts wisely so they can survive on their own.
But somehow, as with humans, animals have figured out how to be good mothers. And some are just exceptionally amazing at it.
Just like how this patient mare tries her best to teach her colt to make the giant leap.
It’s another mundane day for these horses. They are enjoying the strong warm winds in the vast green fields of the countryside. It is exceptional weather for taking a walk outside so this pair decided to go on a stroll.
And as a foal, each day is a new adventure. But sometimes these adventures require a bit of help. Like the little colt who suddenly encounters a bit of a problem that he must overcome. A low but sturdy wall is blocking his way and his mom is nowhere insight to help him. The mare hasn’t noticed yet that her foal isn’t following her anymore.
Afraid as he is, this little colt continues to plod to and fro as if weighing his options seemingly unsure of what to do.
As he gathers enough courage, he goes back running as he tries to make it across the wall, but only to fail miserably. When he sees the low wall up close he loses the strength making him back down and just go in circles.
The poor foal still doesn’t trust himself enough that he can actually accomplish the task. But the young one doesn’t need to worry, here is where his mom comes to the rescue.
The mighty mare comes back to fetch her little one. Making big strides, she leads her away from the wall to teach her the proper technique of utilizing speed and momentum.
When there is enough distance between them and the intimidating wall, the graceful mare gains speed with her foal the following suit. And together they race through the wind and effortlessly make a wonderful jump.
They land safely on the other side of the wall and the colt is never happier. He even shows off by impressing us with his unmatched speed despite his short limbs, as he catches up with her mother.
Next time, this colt won’t be frightened of crossing walls anymore. All thanks to his mother for getting her out of the sticky situation.
You might have heard many moms complaining that kids don’t come with an instruction book. That rings true for the animal kingdom as well. But just like humans, they also adapt and try their best to be good teachers to their children.
