Leaving an old pet out on the streets has to be the most selfish thing a person can do, but we think we’ve found a story that tops the rest. In Abilene, Texas, not only did somebody leave their five-year-old dog in a parking lot, but in a horrible twist of events, they also left the pooch with her litter of two-week-old puppies.
The mama dog had no food, water, or a comfortable place to sleep, and the poor defenseless puppies were still completely reliant on their mom for getting their nutritious food. Without the quick action of a local rescue team, these puppies would have certainly not survived – but luckily this story has a happy ending.
KTXS Television shared the heartbreaking story with us on a video through their Facebook page, and it wasn’t long before the poor mama dog and her pups had become viral. Since being posted around two months ago, the video received over 34k views and 771 reactions, as people’s hearts broke collectively over the way that these poor babies were treated.
It all started when a picture of the Boxer-mix and her babies was posted onto social media.
They had been carelessly abandoned in a parking lot of North Side Baptist Church in Abilene, and it was clear from the mom’s frightened facial expression that she was in a distressed state. Not only was she fighting for survival, but she was also desperately trying to keep her nine tiny puppies alive as well.
Luckily, Mistie Boerger of Paw Angel Animal Rescue was one of many to see the post, and she knew instantly that she had to help.
“I saw the picture and it just broke my heart, (so) I called Angel and said, ‘hey, there’s a rescue- we need to go right now,'” she told KTXS.
Mistie and Angel rushed over to the parking lot and put the dogs safely in the backseats of their car. Unsurprisingly, the mom was in urgent need of medical attention, so the dogs were rushed straight to the veterinary center for treatment.
Heartbreakingly, one of the puppies was found to have a tumor in his throat, and the poor little guy had to be put to sleep. But the silver lining was that his brothers and sisters were going to be okay.
Mistie decided to foster the dog and her pups until they were old enough to all go their separate ways. She knew that they could be safe and comfortable in her house, and happily, they recovered quickly from their ordeal.
“They will be staying with me for two weeks and then moved to a permanent foster. They will placed for adoption after they have been spayed and neutered and mom is spayed,” she wrote on Facebook.
The rescue center also sent out a plea for help to care for the pooch and her pups. They worked out that the cost of food and supplies would be around $2,500, and asked for donations in order to be able to cover these costs.
Amazingly, they managed to raise over $1,000 – and although it wasn’t the target amount, it really goes to show how many generous people there are in the world.
Some time on from the rescue, it was revealed that the mom and her puppies had all gone on to find their furever homes. What a brilliant result! We’re so thankful for people like Mistie and Angel who make sure these sadly abandoned animals get another chance at life. Watch the sweet video below.
