It’s a well-known fact that most cats and dogs don’t get along. Typically, it’s because of the size difference between the two species.
It naturally causes the cats to be afraid of the big dogs.
However, in a recent video where a family introduced a newborn puppy to a mama cat, we got to find out what happens when the tables are turned. Here’s a hint: it’s not what you would expect.
The tiny puppy was obviously only a few minutes old.
In the video, the woman carried him around in a towel, his fur still wet from coming out of his mom during birth. His first glimpses of the world caused him to squeal excitedly, but that’s mainly because he had no idea what was coming next. Soon, those squeals of excitement would turn into squeals of sheer terror.
In most situations, one of the first things a newborn puppy does is to greet the other puppies in the litter and cuddle up next to them. However, this puppy didn’t have that luxury.
Thanks to the curious humans in the household, the first animal he got to meet was actually the family cat.
They brought him over and set him down into a cardboard box where the cat was waiting. It made us a little scared watching because we had no idea what would happen. According to the Animal Human Society, it’s recommended that you wait several days at least before introducing new pets with each other. However, this family didn’t follow the rules.
“The goal is to allow the pets to get used to each other’s presence without face-to-face contact. Even if they can’t see each other, they can hear and smell each other,” explains the AHS.
Immediately, the cat looked up at the humans as if to say, “Why did you put this weird squealing thing in here with me?”. She was so confused. The puppy was small enough to fit in a person’s palm or in other words, small enough to easily fit inside the jaws of a cat.
He was about the size of a big mouse or a guinea pig and the cat was about ten times his size.
She could have easily eaten him if she wanted. We wouldn’t have been surprised at all if she saw him as a snack or an opportunity to get back at all the bigger dogs who had wronged her over the years.
However, after a few seconds of confusion and pondering what to do, the cat couldn’t help herself — her mothering instincts kicked in.
She and the pup became instant friends. The pup cuddled up next to her and the cat embraced him with her loving paws. That’s when the pup finally realized that he was safe and stopped squealing.
He saw that the cat wasn’t going to hurt him and he quickly became completely content.
The mama cat might not have been the mom he expected to see after being born, but that didn’t matter one bit. She was still a mom and that was all that mattered to him.
Soon after though, we got another amazing surprise. There were kittens in the box too!
Out of nowhere, a couple of newborn kittens popped out from underneath the mom and started squirming around the box and cuddling with the pup as well. It was a beautiful twist.
It’s safe to say that they are all going to grow up to become one big happy family someday. In their household, it doesn’t matter whether you are a dog, a cat, or a human… everyone gets along.
