For people who are looking to get a hands-off pet, cats are usually the way to go. They tend to be easy to clean up after, easy to feed, relatively independent and relatively small. For cat owner Stephy Hirst in Australia, she was likely thinking of these potential benefits when she adopted her kitty, Omar. Little did she know that Omar would grow up to be big—really big.
Though Maine Coon cats like Omar are larger than normal cats in general, Omar himself is even an exception. Though he was tiny when he was just a kitten, he quickly grew and grew until he weighed more than 30 pounds. To top it all off, he measures 3.93 feet long which qualifies him as the longest living cat in the world. That claim has even been substantiated by the Guinness Book of World Records.
Omar originally came to the world’s attention through Cats of Instagram, a fan page with a name that explains itself. Once he was noticed, Hirst was reached out to directly by the team at Guinness who wanted to meet Omar in person. Sure enough, he ended up being even longer than a cat named Ludo in the UK. Though Ludo was huge himself at 3.88 feet, Omar still ended up taking the title.
Regardless of the extra challenges of having an enormous cat, Hirst still seems more than happy with her furry companion. Though he’s only a year old, he’s essentially a little lion that loves to cuddle. Still, despite all the fame and the attention, Omar likes to stay out of the spotlight and live a quiet life. Though he’s not too much of a handful now, Hirst says that the little guy is still growing.
Though Omar is adorable, there are a few different takeaways to consider here. Though it’s always great to adopt animals, be careful when you choose a Maine Coon because you never know how much they’ll grow. That said if you like the idea of having a huge furry friend around the house then go right ahead. After all, Omar does seem pretty cute.
