Truck drivers in America live some very interesting lives. They often sleep on the road and go long stretches of time without seeing those they love. It can be quite a lonely occupation! For Paul Robertson, loneliness seemed to be his only consistent companion.

Over the years, driving the road all alone can get very boring and lonesome. Thankfully, Paul discovered a friend that turned out the be the purrfect companion for his long trips across the country.

Howie was an adopted cat that loved being with Paul during his road trips.

They were best friends for years until he passed away back in 2017. Paul was really hurt when he passed and wracked with grief. Finally, after some time to heal, he went into a local shelter to see if he could find any other cats who would make the perfect road trip companion.

When he walked into the animal rescue, he knew exactly the cat he wanted.

A ginger cat with a missing tooth, torn ear, and scars across his body was looking at him. He knew that it was meant to me. The cat was named Percy and he asked about his life. As he expected, Percy didn’t have an easy life.

Percy lived on the streets and had finally been taken into the shelter.

Many cats who live on the streets can become protective and aggressive towards humans. Percy, however never lost his kindness. He was super sweet and loving and seemed to bond with Paul in a special way. It was clear that Paul was meant to adopt him.

Percy makes the best co-pilot ever and Paul loves having him with him! On every trip they go on, Percy rides on the specially designed platform that Paul made for him so he could look out the window.

“He’s very affectionate and loves to crawl on my lap, up my chest, and then rub cheeks with me. He loves to play. He purrs a lot. And of course, he’s a cat: he loves to eat and he loves to snooze.”- Paul wrote on Facebook.

During their relationship, Paul has had a few scares.

While at a truck stop one night, they went to sleep. When he woke up, the passenger window was down and Percy was nowhere to be seen. He was terrified and knew some really bad weather was about to come in. He had to leave and was scared that he would never see him again:

“I’m a commercial truck driver … and I’ve signed on a dotted line saying I will have it delivered by such and such a time. I don’t have the choice to stay if I want to,” he said.

After 400 miles and multiples stops, he witnessed a miracle.

Percy came out from under the truck and was covered in oil! He had climbed around the truck and had gotten stuck. He was hungry but otherwise was fine. Since then, he had been much more careful.

“The other day I caught myself laughing at one of his antics and I thought: ‘It’s nice to live alone sometimes ’cause you can have everything your own way – but I wouldn’t be laughing like this if I were alone.’ Percy is good for my spirit and soul,” Paul said.
