Walking along the road seems so menial and mundane most of the time. But, if you do the same thing long enough, you will usually discover that wild things tend to happen, given long enough.
While walking down the road one day, a woman spotted a small squirming blob on the grass.
One woman was walking her son home from preschool when she saw something on the ground. It was a strange pink blob, and she didn’t quite know what it was! As she got closer, it became clear – there was a baby animal stranded!
When we say baby, we mean it! This tiny animal was about the size of a lighter and could fit in the palm of a hand.
The woman had a strong conviction that all animals deserve a chance at survival and decided to take it in. After some research, it became clear the little pink blob was a squirrel! It looked like it had fallen out of a nest and was totally alone. It was cold out, and she knew that if she didn’t act then, it wouldn’t make it.
After she took it home, she began the long process of helping the creature to recover.
Despite her husband thinking she was absolutely crazy, she kept up with the baby squirrel, tending to all its needs. Every couple of hours each night, she would get up to feed and warm the tiny body up to make sure it survived.
Soon, she was taking the squirrel around with her wherever she went!
As the squirrel got older and stronger, it started to develop a personality! Like most animals, the baby squirrel started to grow up! Humans take 18 years to grow up (usually MUCH longer than that), but squirrels don’t take nearly as long.
Over 200 species of squirrels live around the planet. These include ground, flying and tree squirrels. A squirrel comes into the world without hair, teeth or strong nails on its feet, which it later develops as an adult. After about 14 weeks the young adult is ready to be on its own. – Sciencing
They even named it Steve!
Steve the squirrel went everywhere with his mom! It didn’t matter if it was work or to the store, he was always present in his little shoebox that she carried around. He was as sweet as can be and loves to wrestle.
After some climbing session outside as he learned to climb and forage, he was ready to go off on his own.
It was really hard to let him go, but after they released him into their yard, he was gone… for a time! He soon came back and visited their yard, scavenging for food!
Eventually, he even found a lady squirrel that he spends his time with! They named her Jolene! Through the actions of one woman on a walk, she was able to save the life of a squirrel who is now as happy as can be.
