Children are some of the most empathetic people on the planet.
Children are curious. They’re often very open to accepting those who are different.
This story is the perfect example of this. It involves a kitten that every adult had written off and a little girl who was determined to help the cat survive.
When a disfigured kitten was abandoned on the streets of Istanbul, Turkey, locals were too put off by her looks to stop and help. Starving and in dire need of love, the entire city had seemingly ignored her solely because of her appearance.
But then, as fortune would have it, a selfless and loving 7-year-old girl found her.
The little girl found the kitten living between garbage cans, trying not to starve. The girl wasn’t put off by the cat’s appearance, and she knew she had to help her.
This little girl took the malnourished kitten in and brought her to her father.
Together, they rushed her to an animal hospital. There, they discovered that not only did the poor kitten have visible physical deformities, but she was also infested with mites. The vets set out on an ambitious plan to save her.
The vets and nurses tried everything to reconfigure the kitten’s face. The poor little kitten had gone through so much.
Slowly but surely, the vets helped nurse the kitten back to health. They even surgically repaired her roughest features.
Not to mention, her friend was there by her side the whole time.
When she was finally healthy again, the kitten was named Gülümser, which means “she who always smiles.”
A rescue group called Viktor Larkhill: Extreme Rescue stepped in to help the tiny kitten. The rescuers cared for the kitten and searched for her forever home.
“That was my first contact with a truly extreme case… a cat that nobody even dared to treat. I looked into that kitten’s eyes and both our lives changed forever,” the rescuer wrote on Facebook.
Once the kitten was well enough, she was adopted out to a family in Holland.
Her new family loves her so much that they even made her the star of their Christmas card.
Gülümser now has a wonderful life in Holland, where she spends her time playing with her family and simply enjoying life. But Gülümser never would have been able to find her happy ending without the little girl who first took a chance on her. Thanks to this girl, Gülümser is in a great place.
