Being separated from family is one of the most horrifying things that can happen to a person. We all remember being lost in the store when we were little – searching desperately for our parents, wondering where they could be! This is exactly what happened to a lioness at Kruger National Park in South Africa.
The lioness was separated from the rest of her pride in the vast expanse of nature within the national park. She laid in the tall grasses near a dirt road for three days, calling out desperately to her pack. The feline’s distress over this loss was extremely evident: she did almost nothing besides look for her family for days on end. On the third day, she cried out for over 40 minutes, intent on finding the other members of her pride. In between cries she would look down to the ground. It seemed all hope was lost.
Suddenly, something incredible happened. Four members of her pride appeared walking down the dirt road! Slowly more lionesses emerged from behind the trees. As the group came closer to where the lost lioness was laying, they began to recognize the sound of her voice. They ran to meet her!
Immediately hope returned to the lost lioness. She stood up and examined the newcomers. She prowled toward them reluctantly, making sure they weren’t a group of strangers. When they recognized each other they quickly ran toward each other! She was reunited with her family at last.
The lioness’s pride was extremely welcoming. They all began to exchange greetings and play together. Soon the whole group was laying in the grass together. The formerly lost lioness had two friends helping to clean her – licking her head with great affection!
