Eryn had been visited by a blind raccoon for about five years that was believed to be about that old.

“There is something wrong with his tapetum lucidum,” Eryn wrote on YouTube. ” His eyes shine bright green during the day. He is at least partially blind. He walks into things. He is afraid of the wind, high grass, birds, and snow. “

Despite his disability, he managed to survive by scavenging and begging for food.

“He is out and about during the day. He comes to our house for food early in the morning usually around 6-9AM,” Eryn observed. “He often returns for seconds and sometimes comes back for thirds. His bottom lip is missing so we feed him soft pasta noodles soaked in cream of chicken soup. We often cut up small pieces of hot dogs, ham, pork, etc. He refuses to eat canned cat/dog food. “

Eryn figured that he didn’t have rabies or distemper since it isn’t that unusual for a raccoon to be out during the day and that he would have already died if he did have those illnesses.

The raccoon would always be on his own until he one day showed up with some friends who would be known as “his bodyguards.”

But they weren’t other raccoons. They were two little black kittens. Apparently, they worked out a mutual relationship. The cats would serve as his bodyguard and the raccoon would show them where he got food from.

“They would magically appear when he would come for food. So they figured out that Blind Raccoon = FOOD,” Eryn explained. “So they would appear when the Blind Raccoon (and sometimes other raccoons) would show up.”

After the kitties and the raccoons had their fill of food, the cats would escort the blind raccoon back into the woods.

According to LoveMeow, it wasn’t long before the raccoon passed away though he lived several more year than the average raccoon’s lifespan which is about two years.

“A blind/handicapped raccoon surviving at least five years is a pretty long time,” Eryn said. “He was a miracle.”

The cats were reportedly saddened over the loss of their raccoon buddy, but Eryn was there to comfort them.

She eventually earned their trust and ended up keeping the black kittens.

“Turned out that I needed the black kittens as much as they needed me. Taming them helped me slightly cope with the loss of my mom and my 15-year-old cat within nine days of each other,” Eryn said. “Before mom came down with the flu that ended up sending her to the ER, she said that she wanted to keep the kittens… (and) didn’t want them to get cold.”

So that’s exactly what Eryn did. Now they live with Eryn and her other cat Squirt as one big happy family. And though they all miss their raccoon friend they have the fond memory of his friendship.
