When an animal needs help, it’s always amazing to see how ready people are to jump to the occasion. Even in some of the worst situations, a phone call or Facebook post later and people are swarming to help. Watching people help animals in need is always a reminder that “there is still hope for humanity,” as the saying goes.
Kritter Klub documented one of the saddest situations involving a kitten.
While walking on the street, people thought they heard a strange noise coming from under their feet. When they investigated further, they discovered what the situation was. A kitten was trying to get their attention.
The kitten was trapped in the drainage grate that ran parallel to the road and couldn’t get out.
The grate was only a few inches wide, big enough to see into and out of, but not enough to pull the kitten out. By meowing, the kitten was able to get the passing humans’ attention and ask for help.
The original man who found the kitten had been feeding her for two months!
When the man realized that there was a cat down there, he reached out his hand and tried to touch her. Instead of reacting fearfully, the cat actually wanted to play! Day after day, the man fed and comforted the kitten. Two months later and the cat was still living in the gutter.
Kids started to take shifts to feed the little cat!
Once others found out about the stuck kitten, they jumped to help. Each day they would pour water down the drain into a waiting dish and sprinkle food into the crevice. Slowly, the little sewer cat became famous.
Once more people found out about the cat, they decided to do something about it.
Bringing a vet on-site, they knew they had to act fast. He explained that a cat could fit through any hole its head can fit into, and the kitten probably went into the drain when it was little and grew too large to get out. With the gutter’s bacteria and environment, he explained that the situation could turn for the worse any day.
Rescuers came out to try and save the isolated kitten.
Naming it Nabi, they got to work with the rescue. They first stuck a camera into the drain to see if they could find a way out nearby. When that didn’t pan out, they started to look for a manhole cover they could enter to gain access to Nabi.
They came up with a plan to guide Nabi out once they removed the manhole cover.
The worst thing would be for Nabi to run away in fear when they opened the manhole. Blocking off the other exits with a net, they planned the daring rescue for the little kitten with precision.
Finally, it was time for the rescue.
Scaring Nabi into the correct tunnel was part of the plan, unfortunately. After banging the gutter’s sides and leading Nabi down the right tunnel, they came to an impasse. Nabi wouldn’t go any further down the last bit of tunnel!
Her original friend put on a suit and hopped down to help Nabi feel more comfortable.
Finally, with cheers and celebration, they were finally able to bring Nabi out of the gutter! Even better, her friend decided to keep her, and now she lives in his apartment with him. Some stories do turn out for the best!
