How could someone abandon puppies in a river?

The story of the potato sack puppies and their wills to live will move you to tears.

In the state of Massachusetts, two kayakers were making their way down the Blackstone River when they heard what sounded like soft whimpers coming from the water. Spotting a potato sack floating on the surface of the river, the kayakers plucked it out, believing it was the source of the whimpering.

These two Massachusetts kayakers suddenly became guardian angels after opening the sack and discovering six newborn puppies. According to Little Things, the six puppies were only one week old.

Someone crammed the newborn pups into the potato sack and chucked the sack into the river like trash.

Despite nearly three decades in the police force, Uxbridge Police Chief Jeff Lourie could hardly describe the painful sting of knowing someone could do this.

“It’s unconscionable, you can’t imagine what’s going through my head as a police officer for 29 years, someone would do that, someone would take six fairly newborn puppies and discard them in a body of water.”

All six newborn pups have surprised everyone with their will to survive.

Currently, the resilient puppies are receiving care at Uxbridge Animal Control. During their treatment, the six puppies are on a combination of goat milk, dog formula, and probiotics. The runt of the litter is receiving antibiotics.

Uxbridge Animal Control officials suspect the pups should be ready for adoption within a few months. Animal lovers across the United States are eager to take the puppies in and provide them with a loving home.

The Uxbridge Police Department continues to search for a man riding a mountain bike who was seen in the area around the time the puppies ended up in the river.

The police believe the puppies hit the water between 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. Sept. 24. If the police find the culprit, he “will be punished to the fullest extent of the law.”

After receiving an overwhelming number of responses from the community regarding the puppies, the Uxbridge Police Department took to Facebook to offer an update.

“We are overwhelmed by the responses with regards to the puppies found yesterday. We have such a caring and great community and we appreciate everyone’s outpouring support and concern for the puppies. If anyone has any information please contact our Police Department any time and we will have you speak with one of our Detectives. If you are looking to provide a monetary donation to help, you can certainly send a check to our ‘Uxbridge Regional Animal Control Gift Account’ at 275 Douglas Street, Uxbridge MA. We would like to remind everyone to please consider the many, many dogs looking for loving homes in the many area shelters here locally and beyond.”

The police department took to Facebook again to remind the community to only call dispatch for emergencies.

While they appreciate the incredible interest, they want people to stop calling the police department to ask about the puppies.

“In recent days Uxbridge police dispatch has been inundated with phone calls in regards to the puppies found and how to go about the adoption process. Although we are extremely thankful and appreciative we kindly ask that you refrain from calling the Uxbridge police dispatch for this information. Any information regarding the adoption process will be posted on social media and the news in the upcoming weeks. Our dispatchers are very busy answering 9-1-1 calls and other emergencies. Thank you for your understanding.”

The police department also announced a reward for any information leading to the capture of the individual who left the puppies for dead.

The Uxbridge Police Department encouraged people to follow on Facebook for additional updates about the potato sack puppies and their adoption process.
