Two men were hailed as heroes for allegedly rescuing a little kangaroo from frigid waters in Lake Burley Griffin in Canberra.
And the rescue was caught on video.
But some question whether it was a true rescue or if these humans were just meddling with a kangaroo who didn’t need any rescuing.
The video shows a kangaroo standing in shallow water that hits him at the knees and the two men at the ankles.
An article in the Daily Mail, says that the water was freezing.
It was September, which was still winter in Australia. The two men softly walk toward the kangaroo, who is crouched over and doesn’t seem to be in danger.
The only thing stopping the kangaroo from getting to land is a ledge, which being a kangaroo, seems like he’d be able to overcome no problem.
The two men creep close toward the kangaroo one on each side of him and speak softly trying to coax him.
Finally, they come close enough for them to snatch him while someone off-camera cheers him on saying, “Well done!”
The kangaroo makes a sound and struggles but ultimately allows himself to be carried off by the men.
A third man helps to pull the kangaroo over the ledge, while one of the men pats the kangaroo on the rear several times for whatever reason.
As soon as they let him go, he turns back around and looks as if he wants to jump back in.
But the men refuse to let him do so and tell him to, “Go back that way.”
He seems to chirp a bit and the third man just holds onto his hands to calm him.
Eventually, people back away from him and they let the little guy’s hands go.
But this little kangaroo was scared and held onto the man’s hand.
The kangaroo then tries to get past the man and is again prevented from doing so.
The men finally let go of the kangaroo’s hand and he is allowed to take a step and the video ends there.
It’s unclear why the kangaroo needed to be rescued from the water.
Some commenters thought the kangaroo was in the water to get away from the men. Others thought he was stuck.
Some kangaroo experts say that the reason why the kangaroo was in the water in the first place is because he was scared.
“There’s a very strong instinct — kangaroos will go to water if they’re threatened by a predator,” kangaroo ecologist Graeme Coulson from the University of Melbourne told ABC.net
The kangaroo does this so that they have a chance of drowning a predator or whoever they are threatened by if the predator or aggressor comes toward them in the water.
Either way, the kangaroo did see calmed by one of the men at one point and did reach out to hold his hand during their encounter which you can check out in the video below.
