Even though street dogs are tragically common, some of these stray dogs are in more urgent need of a rescue than others. That was certainly the case with this 15-pound pit bull that was found in Massachusetts, who had extremely severe injuries.

The pup’s body was absolutely covered in bruises and infected sores. He was infected at the back area and was hurt around one of his eyes as well, and it seemed like the dog wouldn’t have long to live at all. Luckily for him, this story ended happily thanks to the remarkable efforts of his rescuers and animal lovers.

He was found by people from Brockton Animal Control, and the story of his rescue had spread quickly.

The rescuers from Second Chance Rescue in New York City heard about the dog and wanted to do everything they could to try and help out.

“Second Chance Rescue NYC began as a small dream, founded on the firm belief that all animals deserve love and care, and that no animal should ever be subjected to abuse, neglect or homelessness. They are 100% not for profit and to date have relied solely on donations from the public. Their mission is to offer a second chance to those less fortunate—those with critical medical, emotional or behavioral issues. We are a lifeline for thousands of cats and dogs that otherwise wouldn’t stand a chance,” their statement reads.

After they met him, the rescuers gave him the name ‘XO’ because of his sparkling and loveable personality, as he always handing out hugs and kisses to the people he interacted with.

Alyssa Ellman is one of the volunteers from the Second Chance Rescue Group and they wanted to get XO a foster home in the hopes of introducing him to a family that would be willing to take her in. The team was thrilled to hear that a family was willing to take XO in, but the only problem was that the home was a good 250 miles apart.

Luckily, Alyssa’s didn’t want to give up.

She reached out to people in the Ready To Roll Facebook Group, where people meet who transport dogs across the nation to get them to their foster homes.

Alyssa herself drove XO from Massachusetts to Rhode Island, as she passed XO to another volunteer to get him closer to his destination. After a stop in Connecticut, another volunteer took over and finally made it home thanks to these fantastic volunteers.

Foster dad Teri Eckel has already stated that he absolutely adores XO.

“He’s a sweetheart. I just wish we could find the horrible person that did it to him because it’s truly sad,” he said.

According to the rescue organization, XO hasn’t completely recovered yet but has luckily shown significant progress. What a remarkable rescue story!
