We’re much more accustomed to seeing horses at a farm than we are out in the wild – but wild horses are still very much a thing in the U.S., and can be found in remote areas of states such as California, Nevada, and Utah.
Since these horses have no human owners to take care of them, like any other wild animal, they can sometimes find themselves to be in a spot of bother.
It’s organizations like the RSPCA’s job to make sure that wild horses are healthy and free of any injuries.
One day, the RSPCA were alerted to a poor mama horse who was apparently unable to stand up. As the team went to take a closer look, they realized the problem: the horse’s leg had become caught up in her mane.
What’s more, the horse wasn’t alone. Pacing nervously at her side was a small foal, who was clearly very worried about her mom.
Although she was wary of the team, the foal seemed to know that they were here to help her mom. As they set to work, she pranced around the field behind, clearly raring to go.
There was no knowing how long the mom had been tangled in her mane for.
The quickest and easiest option was to cut off some of the horse’s mane, and in no time at all, she was freed up and able to use her legs again.
But the struggle seemed to have taken it out of the poor horse, and even once she was freed, it was difficult for her to find her feet. When the first attempt failed, and then the second, rescuers began to worry that she could be more hurt than they first anticipated.
But then, third time lucky.
The horse was finally able to stand, and while she was a little shaky at first, she soon got her strength back again. Naturally, her foal was ecstatic that they could go off exploring again.
The rescue team watched as the mom and foal trotted off together, just to make sure that the mom’s strength had definitely returned. Thanks to them, they were able to change what could have been a very different outcome.
A video of the rescue was shared on YouTube by The Dodo, and it now has over 20 million views. Thousands of people took to the comments to share their thoughts.

The sad truth is that we can’t care for wild animals like we can with our own pets, but they do get the benefit of being free to run around wherever they want and do as they please.
