The day seemed perfect for capturing awe inspiring footage. The sun was shining bright, the skies were clear, and the ocean appeared even clearer in a magnificent shade of blue.

With Royce Hutain, the captain of the boat, and Jason Anderson (who sported a second aerial camera), Mark Girardeau of Orange County Outdoors went out to sea on July 5, 2015 to capture the amazing footage.

The trio named the Humpback Whale Wally. In return, Wally gave them the show of a lifetime.

Whales are air-breathing mammals who must go to the surface of the water when they need air. They then expel warm air, which becomes vapor when it comes into contact with outside air.

After expelling the old air, they take quick breaths through their blowhole. After that, a whale can hold their breath and remain under water from anywhere between 7 to 30 minutes. Sperm whales can hold their breath for up to two hours!

So the next time you see a whale coming up to the surface, now you’ll know that you were in the right place at the right time. It will take some time to see the sight again, and that’s assuming the whale doesn’t swim meters or miles away.

Meanwhile, a rainbow is a “meteorological phenomenon that is caused by reflection, refraction and dispersion of light in water droplets resulting in a spectrum of light appearing in the sky.” Rainbows and whales share a majestic quality in their own respective beauty.

Overall, whale sightings and rainbow sightings are both rare. The fact that Mark and his team were able to capture the beautiful sight on camera in two angles is very exciting.
