Peacemaker Gandhi once said that “the greatness of a society and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated.”

That’s why the High Plains Humane Society of New Mexico seeks to help rescue dogs and their owners.

Their board members and volunteers work hard to raise funds for low-cost spay and neuter programs.

“We partner with several local veterinarians, veterinarian technicians, and their staff on our low-cost spay and neuter program, providing quality care for each pet,” their website explains.

“This program benefits those people who live below the poverty level, are disabled, elderly, unemployed or work for minimum wage. Additionally, the service people at Cannon Air Force Base qualify for this program.”

And that’s not all the folks of this charitable organization do.

“High Plains Humane Society works in Curry County and the surrounding areas to reduce animal cruelty, exploitation and neglect,” their website says.

“We advocate for sensible public policies that bring forth positive changes in our community, and we educate the general public on the importance of being responsible pet owners. We are constantly striving to make this world a better place for our furry friends, and we network with other organizations who share our beliefs.”

High Plains Humane Society also helps to provide vaccinations and microchip services.

In addition, they help spread the word about pets who are in need of a forever home.

“We take pictures of the animals at the local Clovis and Portales City Animal shelters, in order to network them so they can be seen, and hopefully be reunited with their owners, be adopted or rescued,” their website explains.

The folks at High Plains Humane Society had no idea what they were about to spark when they snapped a photo of a super sad looking pup.

They visited one of their partner shelters and captured a photo of a particularly lonesome looking dog.

The dog had tears streaming her face. And though the tears were caused by inflammation, it appeared that the dog was crying. So, when they posted a picture of the pup on Facebook the internet literally went insane.

The internet’s heart collectively broke. Requests to adopt the solemn-looking dog started pouring in.

Eventually, one woman was chosen as the dog’s forever friend.

And the internet was overjoyed to find 0ut that the tearful dog found a forever home.

“Oh, I am so glad…..she looked so terribly sad and I wanted so bad to go rescue her, but I can’t keep bringing home every fur baby I see needing rescue,” one Facebooker commented.

“Yes!!!! So happy she was adopted!!! Thank God! And the new fur-family!” said another.

“So happy she has a home now,”said another. “I just wanted to hold her and keep her.
