A single act of kindness can impact a life in truly tremendous ways, as two stray puppies can illustrate.
Wandering lost and alone, two friends were scared and homeless in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. They protected each other as people passed them by on their own ways home, ignoring the dire straits in which they found themselves. Starving on the streets, the two experienced hardships that bred uneasiness and despair, relying on each other to make it through the day despite how vulnerable they were.
They lived in confusion and fear until one day, their misfortune was noticed by local Buddhist nuns in a pagoda. Taking pity on the poor puppies, the Buddhist nuns approached them with kindness and brought them home to their temple. There, the puppies were fed, sheltered, and given love to help them recover from the wretched life they lived before; thus, starting a new life for the friends.
Since finding their new home, the two puppies will not stop hugging each other out of pure relief and happiness of being safe and warm. The care of the Buddhist nuns has touched the hearts of these two friends, as they still hold onto each other ready to face the world and protect each other. As they adjusted to their new home, the bigger puppy held his smaller friend close in protection, not used to the kindness and attention they were being given after so long alone.
Buddhists respect animal life and believe it is wrong to hurt or kill animals, according to the British Broadcasting Company, so the adoption of these two puppies makes absolute sense. Buddhists also believe that animals can achieve enlightenment, and thanks to the loving-kindness extend to these two may have the chance.
Due to the love and care the Buddhist nuns offered to the young puppies, they are slowly adjusting to their new circumstances. Taking a cue from their rescuers, they’ve even begun to meditate on their own, settling into the lotus position just like their new friends. Every day, the two become more confident and comfortable at the temple, relaxing as they learn they now have a loving home.
Strays aren’t uncommon in Vietnam, which is why more and more non-profit organizations are appearing. In Hoi Chi Minh City, Animal Rescue+Care is a nonprofit organization that rescues and rehabilitates animals found on the streets, according to their website. Run only by volunteers, animals they take in receive the medical care and love they need and are neutered before seeking a forever home. Unfortunately, they can’t take in all the animals they find as they are usually overcrowded already, so the organization advocates for a trap, neuter, and release program to reduce the number of strays wandering Ho Chi Minh.
As for the sweet pups living at the Buddhist temple, we are so happy they found a forever home on their own, even if the way there was scary and hard.
