If you have pets in your home, you have probably had to clean up after them more than once.

When potty training a puppy, they tend to mark their territory everywhere they can. The problem is, once they pee in a spot, the smell stays, even when you clean it.

When the puppy smells the scent of the pee, he thinks he should pee there again.

This can make potty training tough, and even after you have successfully trained your dog, he still might have accidents in those spots.

You can buy products online and in pet stores that claim to remove the smell and enzymes that get left behind when a dog pees, but most of them don’t work. They just aren’t concentrated enough, or they don’t have the right chemicals in them to fix the problem.

Cleaning up pet accidents isn’t as easy as spraying something on the spot and calling it done.

It’s actually a process, and if you don’t do it right, you might just be wasting your time. Condo Blues recently shared a method that will help you remove pet stains and the scents, so your pup doesn’t make the same mistake again. Here’s how to do it.

Ingredients:

  • Paper towels
  • Rag
  • Ammonia-free and pet-safe carpet cleaner
  • Vinegar
  • Water
  • Spot remover machine or brush
  • Baking Soda (Optional)

Directions:

Step 1: Remove any solids with a paper towel. Dispose of them and vacuum the area, if necessary.

Step 2: Blot the area with a rag or paper towel. Do not rub the stain, as this will cause it so to sink deeper into the carpet.

Step 3: Spray the stain with vinegar and water to neutralize the ammonia.

Step 4: Spray the stain with ammonia-free cleaner. The ammonia in pet urine is what makes puppies continue to use the bathroom in the same area.

Step 5: Use a spot cleaning machine along with the ammonia-free and pet-safe cleaner to pull up the urine and remove any traces of it. If you don’t have a spot-cleaning machine, you can use a brush to remove it.

Once you have removed the stain and the smell of the urine from your carpet or rug, you need to keep your pet from having an accident there again.

There are a few ways you can do that.

Step 1: Put some food on the spot where the dog peed. The dog won’t want to use the bathroom where it eats.

Step 2: Schedule an appointment with your vet. Sometimes, pets that can’t control where they urinate suffer urinary tract infections or bladder infections. There are other issues that can cause urination problems, as well. A vet can rule out any issues and possibly give you more tips to help you house train your pet.

Step 3: Consult a behaviorist. Sometimes a dog can have behavior problems, such as anxiety, that make it use the bathroom in the wrong place. A behaviorist can help determine if your dog is suffering from any emotional or mental problems that could be causing the urination problems.

If you notice that your pet is continuously using the bathroom in one spot, there could be a reason for it. Cleaning the spot thoroughly is the best way to ensure that your pet does not continue to have accidents in your home.
