This is something special, and certainly something we don’t see every day. This entertainment act actually happens to be a comedy routine performed by a man and his extremely humorous and well-trained horse. Their act is as surprising as it is hysterical.
Tommie Turvey, from the Equine Extremist team, performed at the 70th Annual Del Mar National Horse Show in California and certainly pleased the crowd. But of course, Mr. Turvey was not alone. At his side was his trusty comedic steed Pokerjoe.
Horses are usually a symbol of strength and confidence, but not at this show.
Horses have long been featured in television shows, films, and live entertainment. They are majestic, galloping animals who often carry the hero and/or villain in so many stories.
But this beautiful and highly intelligent creature named Pokerjoe doesn’t take himself so seriously.
He would rather amuse a crowd with tricks than be all macho and proud.
The show begins
Tommie arrives alongside Pokerjoe, they are both looking dapper!
They ride in with much poise.
Naturally, they begin with a sharp salute. But it doesn’t go as expected. Tommie falls right off and ends up under Pokerjoe, who then gives Tommie a kiss.
Let’s hope this horse has brushed his teeth…
He struggles out from Pokerjoe as the crowd rejoices.
The next most logical step after that apparent misstep is to attempt re-saddling Pokerjoe since it came off in the fall.
But just when Tommie turns his back to grab the saddle, Pokerjoe rolls over from his knees onto his back! There’s no getting the saddle on any time soon!
Pokerjoe looks ready for a nap.
Tommie appears frustrated for a moment until he realizes he still has an audience to please!
He puts on a smile as the crowd chuckles at the antics and just ends up with another toothy kiss from the horse.
Tommie stops fighting and rolls with it when Pokerjoe rolls over onto his back. He straddles the horse’s chest and latches onto his hooves.
Then they do a little dance to the song “Cuban Pete”, which was performed by the masterful Jim Carrey from his 1994 film, The Mask.
After Pokerjoe gets his fill of humor, he finally decides it’s time to get up. He must have remembered that they were there to do a show! But of course, they were still successfully entertaining everyone.
Finally, we get to see some riding! The crowd needed a break from laughing.
But again, this horse has other plans. Tommie ends up on his feet, chasing Pokerjoe in a random path around the arena. This could be a while. Tommy makes a run for the stands. Maybe the audience could help.
Moments later, Pokerjoe is showing off in a big way.
Tommie garners some excitement from the crowd as Pokerjoe finds his way onto the elevated box in the middle of the arena.
This clearly isn’t their first rodeo!
Tommie Turvey mounts Pokerjoe one last time but in reverse! Out comes a small white flag as Tommy signals his surrender and the pair ride off into the evening together.
