Animals are always smarter than we give them credit for. We humans always seem to be outsmarted by the seemingly “simplest” of creatures. Take dogs, for example. We think we have “domesticated” dogs. From their perspective, they have a butler who feeds them and walks them ON COMMAND. Even more, we think we are in charge! If that isn’t genius, I don’t know what is.
One of the most interesting things about animal intelligence is their reaction to music.
“Against the conventional wisdom that music is a uniquely human phenomenon, recent and ongoing research shows that animals actually do share our capacity for it.” – Live Science
For humans, music means a lot. It is a way to tell stories, it serves as a way to pass on information, and it can change our mood! As the research is unfolding, it looks like animals don’t mind music either, as long as it’s suited to them!
Recent data shows that every species of animal has a style they like!
What that DOESN’T mean is dogs like jazz and cats like rock and hamsters are enjoying gospel. What is DOES mean is music that sounds like that species style of communication is appealing to it.
“But rather than liking classical or rock, Snowdon, an animal psychologist at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, has discovered that animals march to the beat of a different drum altogether. They enjoy what he calls “species-specific music”: tunes specially designed using the pitches, tones and tempos that are familiar to their particular species.” – Live Science
Basically, cows might like jazz because the sound of a trombone sounds like a cow!
Pretty simple, right? Knowing that, here is a challenge for you. In a viral video, one animal seemed to LOVE the music it was listening to – enough for it to dance! See if you can guess why the horse likes the song so much!
The song “All About That Bass” what REALLY popular for a while.
From the looks of things, humans aren’t the only ones enjoying the song! At the beginning of the video, we see the horse’s caretaker playing the song on her phone and bobbing to the music. Typical human stuff.
What happens next is pretty incredible!
After the human sets the stage and gives the horse an example to follow, the only thing left is for the horse to show off its own moves! With a point to the horse from the human, the horse bobs its head up and down like it’s actually listening!
Even crazier, it stays on beat!
It’s one thing to bob your head because a human did it. It’s another thing entirely to stay on beat! This horse seems to have a sense of rhythm and enjoys showing off! The best part may be when Meghan Trainor sings, “I’m bringing booty back” and the dancing horse sweeps its head around in even bigger circles! It must be on board with Meghan’s idea.
Now we know why animals love certain music!
Maybe you can spend a few hours this week with your dog to find out what kind of music they like! If that doesn’t work, a little Bass never hurts.
