These breeders from Melbourne, Florida were caught off guard by the birth of a rare filly. Later, they realized how they had been gifted a rare gem after they took a closer look at the baby horse’s peculiar marks.
They breed paint horses and take them to various competitive horse shows.
Jackie and Scott Nelson are a married couple who have a shared passion for taking care of horses. Because of that, they built and owned a riding ranch called Down Under Colour.
Their beautiful horses have a recognizable pattern on their coats known as pinto markings – a coat color in horses that consists of large patches of white paired with another color. They usually take their horses to championship horse shows and they have already walked home a couple of times with victory in their hands.
One day, one of their horses gave birth to a peculiar filly.
The couple was just surprised when one day they realized one of their horses named Poka was pregnant.
Poka was impregnated by an elegant stallion named Chief. After 11 months of pregnancy, it was finally time for Poka to give birth. As it was Poka’s first birth, the Nelsons were anxious and excited at the same time but were instantly relieved after they saw the beautiful baby horse that came out of her.
Comparing the newborn from their usual pinto horses, this one was born with at least ninety percent of its coat draped with white and with just a few brown markings. Despite the couple’s wide knowledge about horses, it took them some time to realize that this particular baby horse holds great cultural significance.
They named the adorable filly as Coconut and her markings tell them that she is a rare warhorse.
There is an indigenous legend that tells about the so-called Medicine Man – a tribe’s healer that would heal his tribesmen with their physical and spiritual problems. They were said to have some sort of supernatural powers that connects themselves to various elements of nature.
Since the Medicine Man is an important figure in a tribe, they would only ride one type of horse – the War Horse.
War Horses are recognized for their special markings and particular characteristics.
The majority of their coats are covered in white but they are still considered as pinto horses because there are colored marks that go with their coats.
However, the difference is that the markings have to be at specific areas just like the mark that cover their ears and a part of the top of their head.
They call that mark a Medicine Hat or War Bonnet.
Asides from that, there is another characteristic that should be noted. These horses had to have at least one blue eye, which the indigenous people would call The Sky Eye. Coconut matches these characteristics perfectly, which is why the couple decided to share their excitement on social media.
Look at how much the beautiful horse has grown over the years.
You would know how much effort the Nelsons put into caring for Coconut just like with their other horses. Just gander at Coconut’s elegant beauty as she continues to wear the legendary markings of the mythological War Horse. Watch the whole video by clicking on the link below.
