On a wintery February day, a horse named Macy, her foal Loca, and another mare named India and her foal were found in an icy field.
The horses were struggling.
The mares had not eaten in ages, and they barely had enough energy to breathe. Macy was doing particularly badly, and she seemed to have almost given up.
It seemed like a completely hopeless situation. Macy lie motionless on the ground as she shivered uncontrollably in the freezing weather.
Then, World Horse Welfare and their rescue team arrived on the scene, and their timing could not have been more clutch.
Wild Horse Welfare chief field officer David Boyd explained more about what happened in a YouTube video:
“My head office in Norfolk received a call saying the member of the public was extremely concerned about two mares and two foals living out in a field in Nottinghamshire. When I arrived, I quickly assessed the situation and found that two mares were in very poor condition.”
David also explained that the foals were doing better than the mares because they were feeding off their mothers.
A vet went out to assess the horses, and he said that Macy’s heartbeat was so low that the only thing they could do was put her to sleep. But it almost seemed like Macy heard him and wanted to prove him wrong. Because right after he said that, she struggled to her feet.
The team immediately transported Macy, Loca, India, and India’s foal to the Hall Farm Rescue and Rehoming Centre nearby.
There, the horses received emergency veterinary care, which saved their lives.
The horses began recovering from their ordeal at a farm in Norfolk, and they slowly but surely regained their strength. Unfortunately, though, David said the person responsible for leaving the horses out in the icy field disappeared.
“Once the people that abuse horses find out that legal things are going to happen, they quickly disappear into the background, so very unfortunately we couldn’t take them to task for the pain and the ill health of these horses,” David said. “However, at least we did remove the horses and they are now assured of a very fit and healthy life in the future.”
The before and after images of Macy are absolutely amazing. Prior to being rescued, Macy was frail, weak, and extremely skinny. She barely had the energy to feed her own foal.
The after image can only be described as a miracle.
David and his team at World Horse Welfare did an incredible job at helping Macy, and it’s amazing to see how much better she looks now. If you’d like to help World Horse Welfare with their lifesaving work, consider donating to their organization.
