Roughly 6.5 million animals are registered into shelters every year, reports the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. However, these numbers don’t account for animals living on the streets.
Homeless and abandoned pets are unfortunately a common occurrence. Luckily, this particular story has a heartwarming ending.
Earlier this year, a Los Angeles-based rescue received a call about a dog struggling to survive on the streets. The rescue, Hope for Paws, is an organization popularized by its honest rescue videos. So, when they got the call about a giant dog wandering the area, they immediately stepped in to help.
Rescuer Loreta Frankonyte was the first on the scene, working to track the large, abandoned animal.
When they finally identified the black, Newfoundland dog, he was crippled from exhaustion.
He lay baking on the sidewalk in the summer heat while appearing completely forlorn. Bribing him with bites of a big, juicy, cheeseburger, Loreta slowly earned his trust.
Although the dog panics when she slips the leash over his head, he quickly calms down once more.
Rescuers named the dog Everest, and once they had everything under control, they started the rehabilitation process.
First, Everest is given a nice, sudsy bath. Then, he cuddles in beside Loreta for the rest of the night.
The rescuers soon learned Everest was an extremely sweet dog, getting along with adults, children, and other animals too— but there was one little problem. In an Instagram post, Loreta explained:
“We bathed him, did the usual wellness tests, etc. He seemed fine, but just wasn’t happy. There was no emotion there or joy. We worried something was wrong, yet he was very healthy.”
If they could break this spell of misery, he’d make a loving family very, very proud.
Going over the adoption applications, Loreta and the rescue managed to find a perfect match for Everest. The family lived two-and-a-half hours away in Oregon, but the rescue knew it was worth the trip. They just hoped once they got there, Everest would finally show a bit of joy.
After a long trip, rescuers were ecstatic to see Everest’s reaction to his new home and siblings.
“The moment we arrived to his new home, Everest blossomed!” wrote Loreta. “He saw snow and he felt right at home!”
“He was so happy running around, eating snow and laying in it. I have never seen anything like it. This is what he needed for his soul.”
“This is the most incredible ending to the story,” she continued. “He has everything he ever wanted. He lives in a stunning place surrounded by mountains and snow— exactly where Everest belongs.”
Since being uploaded, Everest’s story has been viewed more than 3 million times.
Now, the dog’s paying this kindness forward— but you’ll have to watch the video to see!
“He is like a fluffy bear. If I had him, I would hug him all day long.”
“This was very beautiful. I wish good, joyful and long life for this amazing dog!”
“Probably one of the happiest endings I’ve ever seen!”
