If you have a pet, then you know how, as time goes by, it becomes part of your family.

Dogs, in particular, are so expressive and affectionate, that they seriously pass for humans. They are simply family members and they are loved just as much as the humans of the house.

Now, having to give up a dog would be devastating. Even if you didn’t have the money or room to keep your dog, having to surrender it would feel like betrayal.

And it is, but sometimes it is true that people don’t have any other option.

Like a 17-year-old boy from Senatobia, Tate County, Mississippi.

The boy was homeless and he had been trying to get his life back on track, but it proved more difficult than it sounds.

While he was living on the street alone, he met a beautiful dog, a puppy really, not older than 4 months old.

The boy spent his days trying to find a job, but every time he went back, the dog that he named Jada was there.

After some time, however, he realized that he could not keep her, much as he enjoyed her company and although she had by then become his best friend.

So, he decided to surrender her. After considering his options, he walked the dog to the Senatobia- Tate County Animal Shelter.

“He told the dog to stay outside, and she just sat down,” Kris Robinson, interim director of the shelter, told The Dodo. “He came in and said, ‘I’m wondering if you could take my dog.’”

The woman knew that the shelter was full at the time, but, when she heard the full story, she couldn’t refuse to take Jada in.

“His head kinda dropped, and he said, ‘I don’t have a place to live. I live under a bridge right now, and I just can’t afford to take care of her … When I leave to go and try to find work, I hope that she stays and so far she’s been there when I come back, but I’m just worried about her,’” Robinson recalled.

So, they took in the dog, but they didn’t forget to get the boy to fill out a relinquishment form so they could have his contact details.

The shelter was just as much worried about the homeless teenager as they were about the dog, who kept waiting for her owner and seemed confused.

So, they posted about it on social media hoping that someone could help both of them.

Indeed, some days later, a family texted them saying that they were willing to take the teen in along with his dog. This was the best news that Robinson could hear.

When the time came for the boy to reunite with his surrendered dog, nobody could hold back their tears.

“I had made contact with him and said, ‘Look, these people want to help you,’” Robinson said. “He said, ‘What do you mean? Do they want to adopt her? Can I come see her first?’ And I said, ‘No, buddy, they want to help you.’”

“She ran up to him and jumped up on him,” Robinson said. “He was just loving on her, and had a big ol’ smile on his face.”

Now the teen is getting the help that he needed in order to get his life back, and Jada is enjoying her life close to her favorite person.
