It’s hard to leave our fur babies when we go on vacation. So we always want to make sure that we leave them with someone we can trust.

But do you know who it’s also hard on? Our fur babies.

We mean well. We do what we can to make that time away from them as familiar as possible. If family or friends are dog sitting, we always make sure the dog’s routine is always followed. If they’re at daycare, their favorite food, toys, and bed are brought so they don’t feel displaced.

Jeremy and Sarah Henson did precisely that.

They would be 1000 miles away in Las Vegas, Nevada for a much-needed week-long vacation. And since they can’t take their dog, Dexter, with them, they decided to leave him at a local doggy daycare.

Everything was set. Dexter was set and the house was secure. And they left to have a good time.

And it’s a good thing they have a great security system set-up because, on day 3 of their vacation, they got a security notification on their phone. Someone was at their front door in Kansas! Who could it be?

When they checked their phone, they saw their dog, Dexter, ringing the doorbell of their home. This was the same dog that was supposed to be nestled two miles away in daycare.

Dexter was getting antsy and missing his family that he broke out of daycare. And it wasn’t an easy trip. It was only two miles away but usually with a car.

But Dexter was determined. He was going to make the trek and be with his family.

So he managed to jump through a 6-foot fence. Yes, the daycare was surrounded by a 6-foot fence. He jumped over that and prowled through the busy streets of Johnson County, where they live. It took him a while but Dexter got there, 90 minutes later, at 11:30 pm.

“It didn’t surprise me that he was on our front steps. I was just concerned that they didn’t know, so I called them. I was like — my dog’s on your front porch, but I think he’s supposed to be there,” Jeremy told FOX4.

This wasn’t the first time Dexter was in daycare but, in the past, he always had his brother with him.

“He has been kenneled in the past, and hasn’t had too many issues. His older little brother is no longer with us anymore. I think he used to be fine hanging out there with him,” Jeremy added.

Can you imagine what could have been going through Dexter’s mind from the time he left the daycare until he arrived at their house? Incredible.

But Dexter probably wasn’t too worried because, according to studies, dogs have excellent navigational skills and they rely on smells and sounds to get to their destination. We’re just glad he got to the house safely.

After reassuring Dexter through the voice feature of the app, they called the daycare, which promptly picked him up.

It’s a good thing they had that app for the doorbell because if they hadn’t, they wouldn’t have known Dexter was home. And there was an upcoming snowstorm and Dexter might have been stranded outside in the snow if they didn’t have that app.
