11-year-old pit bull Sadie has never tried to escape from their Westchester home in New York, until one day, when she sensed danger in the house.
Serena went home after getting a call from her friend about her dog roaming the neighborhood. She was also advised that some utility men, cops, and firemen were at her property.
She did not expect such a huge group of people to be handling a call about a roaming dog. They appeared to be addressing a bigger issue than just her dog escaping. And true enough, there was a much more dangerous scenario that unfolded, but thanks to her brave dog Sadie, the worst was prevented.
Sadie’s behavior was unusual on that particular day.
On an afternoon in February, Sadie was found to be roaming around the Tuckahoe yard, barking non-stop. When the police arrived at the neighborhood, the dog immediately ran back to her house, looking as if she wanted them to follow her back to the residence.
At the time, Sadie’s mom, Serena Costello, and her daughter were not at home. As the officers approached the property led by Lt. Lawrence Rotta, their noses instantly caught the pungent smell of gas.
Suspecting a gas leak, Lt. Rotta alerted the fire department who urgently responded to the call. Eastchester Fire Department and Con Edison checked the suspected gas leak and concluded that there was indeed a leak coming from the home’s basement. The officers got to work and managed to keep the home from exploding due to the dangerous leak.
Lt. Rotta finally realized that Sadie was trying to tell them of this potential danger all along.
“The dog saved the house from a potential gas explosion and gas leak,” Rotta shared in an interview with ABC 7.
Sadie is one brave and heroic dog. Serena had adopted her when she was still a puppy, and 11 years later, Sadie saved Serena’s and her 4-year-old daughter’s life from danger.
“She went from being in time out to being my girl,” she said. “It looks like she was trying to get out this window…She was determined to get out.”
When Serena found out about everything, she became emotional and was grateful for having a brave and heroic dog like Sadie.
As it turns out, the dog was inside the house and tried to get out through the front door and window. Scratch marks by the door are proof of how Sadie incessantly tried to open it so she could get out.
Sadie must have realized that the front door wouldn’t budge so she made her way to the backdoor and did her best to remove the wooden stopper that prevented the sliding door to open.
She successfully managed to lift the stopper, scratched the sliding door to open it, and ran out of the house to warn anybody she met on the road. That’s when people in the area found the roaming and barking dog and called for the cops.
“She is a hero,” Serena said. “She is our hero. It’s just so out of character for her to do. She saved our lives. Yeah. Emotional.”
Serena was truly proud and thankful for having Sadie in their lives. Her bravery is something that Serena will always cherish.
Sadie’s heroic act has resonated with thousands who have learned of her story through the local news.
She was even invited to the Rachael Ray Show together with her mom. The show awarded her with six months of doggy vacation and a year’s supply of wet and dry dog food and treats. Heroic Sadie definitely deserves it!
